Ernie42141
Well broke my cheapo HE vise today. Broke out a used Babco 605. Anyone have one. Missing a jaw plate trying to figure out how to put in a replacement. Screw holes are shot. Wondering if I preheat would it weld in?
Frosty
No telling but probably not. Pictures really help. Frosty The Lucky.
Nick O
you could try and weld the tooth plate on or tap and die a new hole
Ernie42141
Ok guys I see cast iron, ductile iron, and forged stellar vises. Pros and Cons. Some of these buggers are WAY expensive???
Frosty
Chase the threads in the holes and replace the insert. It's a basic shop skill, you should have no problem finding a how to online. Frosty The Lucky.
Ernie42141
Problem somebody tried a sloppy weld and snagged out both factory holes. Would need to drill and tap from scratch
ianinsa
At the risk of sounding like a heretic,....... I had a similar problem on a vice that I needed to use in a hurry and some chaps were busy on my other vices so I just stuck in a jaw with 'hot melt glue ' as a 'quick fix' that was a few years ago and it's still there. Melts a bit when you stick in hot metal but it hasn't slipped yet.
Ernie42141
Wow. Never thought of that. I was thinking high grade metallic apoxy. Hot glue LOT CHEAPET.

Hot glue is fair game as well, though I'd use epoxy, it's NOT like you'll be hammering on it. Frosty The Lucky.
Ernie42141
Between epoxy and JB Weld. Cleaning up the face and new jaw now.

Hammering on cast iron is indeed a vice, so hammering on that viSe looks just like the vice it is. I can explain that if you need Ian. Just let me know. Frosty The Lucky. ianinsa
But it 'looks' like a versatile vice....ie. A 'vice versa?' seems like I must have got it backwards
