tonyw
You know those fork attachments for a skid loader (or a tractor?) to haul large hay bales around? What kind of steel would those forks be? I'm guessing they are tough, medium point carbon steel. Would they be good for a hardy bick? A small piece off the pointy end would be just right for that... Frosty
They're typically 4140 and yes, excellent for anvils, bicks, hardies, swages, fullers, hammers, hammer dies, etc. etc. Very good score for a blacksmith, you betcha.Frosty The Lucky. BIGGUNDOCTOR
With forklifts it depends on the capacity of the lift as to what alloy they used. I posted some info I got from lift manufacturers, and I believe Glenn put it in the scrap ID guide somewhere. At one auction I noticed the fork was stamped with the alloy.
