Alex,

You can buy Tools, there is no limit to where you can start. OR You can read some books like the ones that have been talked about, and then start making your own TOOLS. They may not be pretty when you start, but they will get better. The story of someone asking how to make 100 of something "You make one, to figure out how to do it. You make another 10 to figure out what works. You make another 110 and pick the best 100. The first 21 will be in the scrap". It is called Learning.

It does not happen overnight!!  Go to the Toy Store and get a container of Play-Dough or Plasticene, or steal your kids. Clay, Play-Dough, Plasticene work identical to Steel, Make it in your hands first!! before you fire up a forge. First Tongs can be Pliers or Vise-grips, who cares. First Hammer can be any style Hammer, even a rock in a stick. Read the Books, Start joining in with your Loco (oops, Local) Blacksmith. Start making mis-Steaks, lots of them. You will learn and not forget. If you purchase Tools, you will miss the LEARNING part.

First, start with making small Tools. As you gain confidence in yourself, you will look at what you are making and then start making it/them "NICE". In about 10 years you will have gained enough knowledge, patience and control to begin "The Journey of the Sword". If you start any earlier, you will defeat yourself with all the negativity that comes with LEARNING, called Mis-Steaks. It is quite humbling to watch the "Learning Pile" grow and gain elevation. There will also be some GOOD MOMENTS, that will come after Patience and Perseverance become friends of yours.

The Journey has a beginning, it also has good and frustrating times. It will have HUGE BONUS Time as well. There is no end to the Journey, you will always learn something. Even watching Mother Nature or the kids playing, you will see something in a different light. it is a GREAT FEELING!!

The Greatest Mis-Steak is not starting. Start small, gain confidence. Weld it, Machine it, Forge it, Heat Treat it, there is NO WRONG WAY.

Enjoy the Journey!!

Neil
