iron quake
Any of you own or ever use a Prentiss or Reed vise with the swivel rear jaw? I'm told these were made to hold tapered objects. How do they hold up in a blacksmithing environment?
Jim Coke
Greetings Iron, They are a great vise and work well for many applications. The jaw position makes it super for filling and detail work. I would not use it in place of a post vise because the rear movable jaw is cast and will not take hard hits. Again it is a bench vise.and cumbersome for most blacksmith work. Just my 2c. Forge on and make beautiful things Jim.
swedefiddle
I think I learnt this from Mark Aspery, how to do that. Take a cut off, of round bar (about 1 1/2" long, 3" dia +/-), cut it in two half moons. weld one of the half moon pieces to the inside of a piece of scrap angle bar. This gives you a round side and a flat side, to hold an odd shape piece in a vice. Take a piece of wire through a hole in the angle bar, to hold it to the vice jaw. Simply Simple!!
