The little side shelf was for use by a farrier to turn the clip on a horseshoe. I am not a farrier, and have never done this, but I guess it did its job. You will find that feature on most anvils designed for farrier work.
April 21, 201412 yr A coachmaker's anvil will have a shelf too only projecting from the side of the body of the anvil to make clips with.
