Admanfrd
The coal I use currently turns white and then to ash the next day. It does NOT coke. What volitiles/ash/moisture percentages contribute to its coking ability? Thanks!
Frosty
Heat turns coal into coke by driving off the volatiles leaving relatively pure carbon. It's the same process as charcoaling wood and it's called "pyrolization." Frosty The Lucky.
jmccustomknives
Coal is made up of carbon, ash, clinkers (residual minerals) and volatiles (flammable organic compounds). Like Frosty said, you burn off the volatiles leaving the rest.
SReynolds
You have HARD coal. What you described is exactly what hard coal will do. I have used it. I would know. Not the best stuff, but I have to admit, it IS clean compared to soft ccoal w/loads of fly ash. However, I would never want to HAVE to use it. JUst north of me is an old coke plant. Beehive ovens. Brick over the "door" Dump in the soft coal. The fresh load of green coal will spontaniously ignite due to the heat from the last fire Waite several hours for the black billowing smoke to clear from the 8" hole in the top of the oven Break open the "door" and pull out the coke. Spray it down with water as you rake it out onto the floor as the oxygen rich air will cause it to burn. Start all over again.
