It looks like this anvil was made to slip over another piece. It does not sit flat on the ground. I picked up this champion forge at the same auction.

its only part of an anvil/vise combo
its missing the other half and the screw mechanism
probally cast iron to boot

It's the kind of anvil you use to straighten bent nails---if you only need to de a couple every now and then. Cast iron, no mass under the "face" it won't hold up to much hammering.

The vise / anvil combo comes apart into the vise and rail section and the anvil section as shown. You have the anvil section only.
