BackyardBlacksmithin Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Hello, so I got this hammer today at an antique store for $4. No clue what its originally for but I figured I could find a use for it and hey the price was right... Any ideas? Quote
nankbrown1227 Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 I have seen old cobblers hammers that looked very similar to this, not saying that's what it is but that is what it reminds me of. Quote
ThomasPowers Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Looks like an old english pattern cabinet makers hammer to me to set small brads you held them between thumb and forefinger and let the crosspeen slip between your fingers till the brad was set. Quote
3DistinctKnocks Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Looks like a farrier's driving hammer for installing horseshoe nails. Just a guess. Quote
Nobody Special Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Awfully long offset, isn't it? Ever say I wouldn't touch that with a 10 ft. pole? This is the hammer you would hit the pole with. Quote
Frank Turley Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 I think that Thomas Powers hit the nail on the head, pun intended. We call them Warrington hammers or pin hammers. The thin peen was supposed to hit the brad head, not your fingers. Sayings and Cornpone "Does a pig have wings?" "Yeah. Pigasus!" Quote
BackyardBlacksmithin Posted August 13, 2013 Author Posted August 13, 2013 Ya thats what I thought too, Im half tempted to anneal down the flat head and use it as a handled hot punch... Quote
ThomasPowers Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Find a pretentious cabinet maker and trade them out of some smithing equipment they might have found... Quote
