I have a fairly good chance at getting a good deal on a Vulcan anvil. The only problem is that the edges of the face of anvil are pretty beat up. My question is: can I repair it? I have a welder that I could use to patch it up, but I am unsure as to how that will go. Do I just go at it with 7018? That would probably mess up the temper right? If I had it professionally fixed, what would that cost me? any information would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance. Really depends how busted up we are talking, any sharpish bits left at all?

Is the main face flat or at least large divot free?

If it was me I would sand back the edge just a little to take away the extremes in the damage then work with the damage, different radius comes in handy, If you need a sharp edge for something, make a hardy tool.

Cost and size or the anvil would be a factor as well, hard with you not being able to post pics of it anymore.

Vulcan's have a quite thin steel face over cast iron.  If the face is missing anywhere and you are not a great weldor; this is one to pass on.  

 

As to cost to repair---my car was in an accident how much will it cost to repair?  Kinda hard to make an estimate with no data isn't it?  However in general a repair done professionally should only cost a couple of times more than buying a better make anvil in better condition.

 

OTOH ABANA chapters sometimes will host anvil repair clinics where anvils get repaired for trivial sums---I had to force money on the fellow who spent several hours re-working my 400# anvil, demanding that he at least accept the cost of the consumables!  I did bring propane for the preheat too. (I've been to such clinics in Ohio and NM so far)

 

I'm not a fan of Vulcan's personally considering them the lowest grade of "real" anvils so a good deal on one to me would be quite cheap indeed!

For a fast fix just bolt a good plate on top. What size, and how much?
