Paul Crosby
I've been practicing with just about any item I can find. I didn't take a picture of the spike before I started, but I'm sure you all know what they look like. This spike I found many years ago with my metal detector. I'm planning on using the area under the head for a bottle opener. It's simple just grind in a groove under the lip. I got that idea in Montana this winter at a bar I went to. I still have some work left to do with it. Thanks for looking!
ThomasPowers
As I'm not a fan of spike knives---why not do one with the beer bottle opener and then forge the other end down into a corkscrew!
lab
nothing wrong with rail road spike knives
Stormcrow
Other than the metal being, at best, at the bottom end of enough carbon to noticeably harden. Not bad forging, but if you want to use scrap metal to practice knifemaking that will then perform like a knife made from good store boughten steel (if fortune smiles on you), go with car springs. If you're putting the effort into making it, it'd be nice to have it function as a knife when you're finished.
