Untame
This anvil is 24" long and 117 pounds. It has a 1" hardee hole right through the middle, and four "sides" each with a different radius profile. Anyone ever seen anything like this? Timothy Miller
The french use a tool like this for forming sheet metal. I don't know much else about them or how they were used.
Ridgewayforge
Looks like a good anvil!
Untame
The french use a tool like this for forming sheet metal. I don't know much else about them or how they were used. Thanks, Timothy. The guy I bought it from (for $60) said that it had been used to shape sheet metal at a freezer fabricator. I can see many good uses for it forging. I need to rig up a stand that lets me rotate it and lock it into place for each of the profiles.
ThomasPowers
Lots of sheet metal forming stuff is just cast iron and won't hold up to heavy smithing hammering.
Jim Coke
Greetings, It looks to me like the intended use was in a vertical position... The square mounting hole is in the end... It does not look like it has had much hammering or use.. Many factory tools are made for a single use and than discarded... It looks to be cast iron and if it was mine I would test it before much use... Have you ever seen a stove pipe anvil ? Jim
Untame
I was a bit wary buying it. I bounced some steel on it before I picked it up, and it seemed to ring clear, but I'm just a novice. I don't think it is cast iron.
Timothy Miller
The one I saw was forged steel.
