February 23, 201313 yr Hi, this is my first time on the forum and I need help to identify what kind of vise I bought. The jaws are about 3.5 inches wide. At first I thought it was a post vise because of the hole in the bottom, but now after looking at the vises in this forum I am not so sure. Also, was $50 a good price to pay for it?
February 23, 201313 yr Greetings newbie, This is the second in a week that I have identified this vise... Its a Cole made by the cole vice company in Chicago.... It came with a slickk drill press that mounted in the slot under the vise jaws... It was made for the construction industry for field work... The hole on the bottom is so you can mount on a stake driven in the ground or put the stake in it and pinch the vise on plate or whatever to use as a lever... Kind of a shopsmith vise... You will find the jaws are very agressive but easy to remove and grind smooth... I have 3 complete sets and use them daily.. Good luck and great find... Jim Looks like you are missing the base mount???
February 24, 201313 yr Just my 2copper pieces, that is a nice buy. Adjust your profile to include your location & you might be surprised at the number of smiths close to you. Welcome & howdy!
February 24, 201313 yr I was the first one Mr. Jim answered the question to. I havee mine mounted to the work table and use it a lot. I like the way it rotates. Nice find. Ultra large vice grip.
February 24, 201313 yr Author Thanks for helping me identify the vise Jim. It does appear that I am missing the base mount, hopefully I can find another one or can make do without.
February 24, 201313 yr I think some of those vices had threaded hole in the bottom to screw in a bar or pipe for a leg. Also I have seen people use that type of vise with out the bench mount. They screw in the "leg / pipe" and use the whole thing like large wrench.
