Firepot welding question

Your Welds Are Fine prep the 1/2 plate with a bevel and sew the thing up and start Forging Steel .

I once had a man come into the shop that I worked in, telling me he was a "certified" welder from Cali. So I handed him a hood, gloves, and some 6010

 

rods and told him to weld a angle iron brace in a truck water tank I was building. After about 5 minutes he called me over and told me something was

 

wrong with the machine or the rods. I took them and welded in the brace and asked him to weld something while I watched LOL. He never moved after

 

striking an arc. He couldnt weld with a mig either. Long story short if his weld would have looked like yours I would have had a little more helo building

 

those tanks. Your welds look fine. Like Sam said prep the 1/2 plate and weld er up and start forging.

Thanks for the compliments on the welds. A few years ago I decided I was gonna learn to weld  so I went to the store and bought the MIG and just plugged it in and started welding. I have alot of fun welding stuff up. I dont do it often but when I do I enjoy myself.

Heres a couple pics from the plate welding. I used the .025 wire since I had it and it was already in the welder. First pic was just an intial pass to fill the seam and put some heat in it. Second pass I just weaved side to side. I ran out of wire though so i'll use some .030 for the rest. Although I borrowed a stick welder from a friend so I may do some with that just for the experience. 

 

I think it came out pretty well.

Ya, I ended up working saturday. So I lost that as a day of messing around in the garage. My work schedule through the week doesnt allow me any free time M-F.

Don't make that thing look to pretty or you'll have a lot of blacksmiths on this site asking you to make them one.  Your welds look great, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Thanks again for the compliments. Not too bad for a guy sitting on his garage floor in 20* temps. The toughest part was cutting the 1/2" plate with a 4" cut off wheel. It took not quite one wheel per cut. My bandsaw needs some work. It has a cracked pulley and hasnt been used in well over 10years.

I'll do a forge table build thread once im closer to done with it. I'd rather nail ya with all the build pics after im done then have a slow drawn out build process drag on in my thread

Brian , Good welds I knew you could do it and you proved my point that the Lil Welder and someone that knows how to use it can in-fact weld 1/2 plate with a lil instruction. Good work Brother .
