advice on a good smith hammer?

Recommended Posts

a friend has recently gotten into smithing. he makes knives mostly. ive been trying to research a good hammer to buy for him , as the one he uses isnt designed for smithing per se. whenever i try to search all i come up with are a bunch of hits for world of warcraft. does anyone know a good company or smith that can supply a quality hammer?

What is wrong with the one he has now?  I am under the impression all power hammers were made for forging.  If you are talking about power hammers, because that is the section you posted this thread in, have a look at Anyang and LG. These are both high quality hammers look in our tailgating section, there are few for sale there. http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/16-tailgating-buy-sell/

If on the other hand you posted without looking around first, which I suspect is the case here, then try our tool section for ideas. here is the link to that.   http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/70-tools-general-discussion/  If you look around a bit I am sure you will find what you are looking for

From the context of the OP's post I suspect that they are talking about hand hammers, not power hammers. The title of this section is slightly confusing and not grammatically accurate if you want people to discuss hammers not swung by hand.  Especially to new folks who have never heard of an open die power forging hammer ever before.   At least it should be Hammers; Treadle...   and better yet the title would be something like Hammers;  Power, Drop, and Mechanical Advantage (Treadle and Oliver).  Not trying to be critical, just pointing out that we often have beginners trying to post to this section questions about their hand hammers.

Colt45, if you want to buy your friend a hand hammer made for smithing, look at the ones sold in these links.  https://www.blacksmithsdepot.com/page.php?theLocation=/Resources/Product/Hammers.xml    http://usaknifemaker.com/forging-hammers-japanese-style-by-nathan-roberts-2-lbs.html   Lots more out there, google forging hammer.

Personally I like Nathan Robert's hammers, he hand makes the ones in the second link.   He's a great guy and teaches hammer making to anyone interested.  The style shown is specifically for knife forging, thou that style is not required, just fancy.

Ignoring the obvious fact of a simple glance at the threads show what this section is for
