John B
Ten days to the open day and forge in at Finch Foundry, Sticklepath near Okehampton in Devon, A repeat of last years "Great Snail Race", forge a snail in the fastest time from bar supplied, Main competition is to Make a candlestick of your own design from your own materials. (no time limit) Or just have aplay and enjoy the ambience, bacon butties and ale for the competitors, free entry for all. Come along and see the water powered hammers working. Usually a great day out, fingers in ears for the anvil firing is recommended. Some pics from past events that may be of interest or amusement. TomN
Looks like a great and interesting event. Wish it wasn't so far away! I still think the guy in the snail competition that made the s nail is a genius.

John B
is this 2012 or 2013 ? I could make 2013. do they ever let anyone forge under the hammers? Sorry Basher, got a bit ahead of myself. 2012, The hammers are a problem as they are restricted on the water draw off from the leat, and not run at anywhere near their potential for H&S reasons, Like a lot of these places, amateurs are in charge and don't really know what they are about. I will try and have a word with the curator and see what he will allow for next year.
John B
Hi Owen, Had a word with the curator, and he was not happy about it being used by anyone other than himself or one of the staff, and they only run it for a couple of minutes, most frustrating knowing how it should be set up, used, and what it should be capable of. Here are some pics of the items made on the day, The anvil was fired on numerous occasions but did not stop the rain, it came down all day,(rain, not the anvil) but did not deter the spirits of the competitors and the visitors.
