November 5, 201213 yr I looking for a way to straighten steel clutch plates. I have several hundred plates all warped. They are around six inch dia, thickness vary from .090 to .130 I'm trying to get away from grinding them. I was told about putting stacks of them in a pottery kiln with some wight on them. will this work or am i wasting my time. Thanks Carl.
November 5, 201213 yr Check with Rod Nielsen at http://www.nielsendesigndiscgrinder.com/Welcome.html. I know that he has had some stress problems causing warping. He has straightened them but I don't know how he did it except that he did not grind them or mill them.
November 5, 201213 yr I think you'd be wasting your time. You'll never get them so strait that they won't need to be machined. Then you run into having to re-heat treat wich compounds the problem.
November 6, 201213 yr Depends what you are wanting to do with them after flattening, and what facilities you have available to you to do them on. One way is to heat up to above critical, then press them flat between platens, then allow to cool slowly, they will then be in a soft state ready for pickling and further working on.
