griffinforge
I took part in the Iron Smelting class at NESM in Auburn ME last week. The week long class was taught by Ric Furrer, and the objective was to build and run two smelters in the Viking and Japanese style. By the end of the week we had two successfully smelted blooms and had enough time to refine them into bars, which in turn were forged into knives. Thanks to Ric for sharing his knowledge of the process and to Dereck Glazer who runs the show at NESM. A few shots of the process...my apologies for the photo sizes. deadmetal61
Where can I find information on these sorts of classes? I watched one of his videos on this subject not to long ago but there wasn't enough info for me to do this at home.
ThomasPowers
"Mastery and Uses of Fire in Antiquity", Rehder, has plans for a "foolproof" bloomery based on modern stuff in it's appendices. If you list your general location you might wrangle an invitation to a smelt close to you! (At least in the USA they are not so rare, can't speak if you are in Europe or South America, Africa, Asia or Australia!)
deadmetal61
sounds like a fantastic idea if anyone catches wind of something like this going on in (or around) east Tennessee let me know

Dead, "He" teaches out of his shop and has a class listing on his website with dates. ;) That book Thomas recommends is very good. Thank you for posting images of the class Rusty. Have you had a chance to work on that multi-bar you made? Ric
griffinforge
Ric, So far I did the final straightening of the blade and did the rough grind of the profile, I should have it looking like a cutting tool soon enough. I'm gonna contact you some time soon for some plans for that hydraulic press we discussed.
