Mark Emig Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Hi All, This is pretty much a straightforward fabrication job, but I'm having fun with it so I thought I'd post some pics. My client came to me with some pics and asked if I could duplicate it, He didn't want to spend $35,000 on the original. The legs and ring get covered in leather, the top will be glass with a partial mirrored surface about 6" in from the outer edge. 4 bronze handles where the legs meet the ring. 36" diameter 15" high. And yes, I know my shop is an awful mess-I'm trying to do a little better-you should have seen it before I started changing my habits. I did most of the bending with the Hossfeld, and adjustments with the screw press. Quote
iron woodrow Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 nice little project, nice to see that it is rivetted..... :) looking forward to more pics Quote
Mark Emig Posted April 14, 2012 Author Posted April 14, 2012 Sorry-no rivets-it's screwed, the same as the original. I'm making it as exact a copy as possible-down to using the same style screws and all. The original is from the 1950's or so I think. But, thank you for the compliment-I appreciate it.. Quote
iron woodrow Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 ok, i was mailnly referring to the lack of tack welds to be honest... :) i love making close replicas to originals. Quote
CurlyGeorge Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Nice. I'll be interested in seeing the legs and ring covered in leather. That should look cool. Thanks for posting. :) Quote
beth Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 nice shape :) i actually like it in metal - will be interested in the Leather Version! :) Quote
Mark Emig Posted April 14, 2012 Author Posted April 14, 2012 I want to make a fire pit with those legs-basically put a big saucer 8" deep in place of the glass top-that'll be cool. Quote
Old N Rusty Posted April 15, 2012 Posted April 15, 2012 Please tell us you got $34,999.00, and the client has to buy the leather, and glass. Quote
Mark Emig Posted April 15, 2012 Author Posted April 15, 2012 No, but I am getting properly compensated. This is a time and materials job. Great client-I've done a LOT of stuff for him (50 foot of rail. 2 sets fireplace doors, zinc wrapped door, countertops, etc), and he keeps giving me more work. Next is a different Adnet hutch of sorts-wood and steel, with the steel wrapped in leather again. I'm actually having fun with it also-it's cool to figure out how someone else did something. Quote
beth Posted April 15, 2012 Posted April 15, 2012 mark - how are you going to do the leather? will it be leather strips wrapped, or long sections stitched on or al glues on or what? its an interesting job, and he sounds like a fantastic client! Quote
Mark Emig Posted April 15, 2012 Author Posted April 15, 2012 The leather gets put on in long sections, glued to hold in place and "saddle stitched" along both edges. It is interesting, and he is :) Quote
Mark Emig Posted May 31, 2012 Author Posted May 31, 2012 Here's a shot of the leather. Bronze handles in progress. Quote

female_blacksmith Posted June 3, 2012 Posted June 3, 2012 Loving the clean, crisp, manicured look that the leather adds. Can not wait to see more photos as it progresses. Quote
Mark Emig Posted June 4, 2012 Author Posted June 4, 2012 Thank you! It has been a fun project. I am going to make a fire pit with same style base (for me). Quote
