Abeck Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Curious if anyone would care to speculate about the value of a 25 lb dupont power hammer. Model O. The hammer currently is not operational and has no motor or belt, it is set up for overhead belt driving power so might need some retrofitting to run off a regular motor. I am trying to talk the owner into selling but he seems to think his hammer is worth a lot. I can't really find any comparables to show him. Thanks for the help Quote
Bentiron1946 Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 I just can't imagine that it would be worth a whole lot more than a comparable Little Giant in similar condition. Quote
Abeck Posted April 2, 2012 Author Posted April 2, 2012 That thought occurred to me, however I'm not sure what the value of a non functioning little giant might be? Also, my assumption is the dupont would be worth slightly less as there are far fewer parts available. Quote
peacock Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 I bought 2 25 # LG Sat. For $ 300 each however they were missing a part or two. i have paid $1000 for rebuildable LG hammers, But remember the company does offer many new parts. Quote
Neaves Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 It depends mostly on condition... but that being equal, there is a big difference between them. The dupont is a much more rugged, industrial machine and probably has close to twice the weight of the LG, with a stronger guide system and larger bearings and designed to work all day, every day for years in a factory setting doing industrial production work. The LG is a smaller, lighter hammer intended to be used in a small blacksmith shop to enhance the output of a smith. If its a well set up hammer, it should have finer control than the dupont. Thats my view, at least. Restoring the dupont could get alot more involved, I know at least some did not have babbit main bearings and could take alot of machining. I would love to have a 25 pound dupont, excellent hammer. Quote
macbruce Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Many is a word that only leaves you guessing.........Where have I heard that?? ........There's a world of difference between $150 and 10x that.........How much is the man expecting to get for the hammer?..... :) Quote
r smith Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Besides not being hooked up to a line shaft, what makes the machine not operational? Is it missing parts? Putting an electric motor to run a mini line shaft/jack shaft above it is an easy thing to do. Lots of info on that type of thing on IFI. Show us some detailed photos Quote
Judson Yaggy Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Location is another factor. Ohio probably has 10x the no. of hammers than LA, so that affects price. If all else were equal (and having owned and operated both LG's and DuPont/Fairbanks hammers) I'd pay at LEAST 1.5 times more for a Fairbanks than a LG. Again all else being equal. A not running but intact LG here in Vermont would fetch at least 1k, probably more. Quote
Timothy Miller Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 I would pay 1500 for a easy to repair 25 lb Dupont 1000 for one that needed major work. 2000-to 2500 for one that is plug in and play. I had a 75 lb for years they are well built robust hammers. Quote
brucegodlesky Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 I'd agree with all the above . The Fairbanks/Dupont line are great hammers! Their claim to fame was the least amount of moving parts, so I was told. I'm running an A (50#) BTW, pulley configuration determines where your motor placement will be. Quote
