John B
It is with regret I have to pass on the news that Louis (Lu) Back has passed away as a result of pneumonia at the age of 100. One of the last traditional blacksmiths of the old school, Lu was a gentleman in every sense of the word. He never received the accolades and recognition he was due, being basically what was termed a jobbing 'smith, learning his trade for over 60 years, working on, and making many prestigious projects, his employers usually getting the credit from the public. Lu was a familiar sight and contributor at various shows around the country until his late 90's, always smartly dressed and wearing a bow tie, he could not resist the draw of the anvil, and would freely pass on his knowledge and experience, quickly knock something out on the anvil, and then leave looking immaculate as ever. Poetry in motion. Not only working in ferrous metals, Lu also made superlative brass fittings for ecclesiastical commissions in many prestigious cathedrals and churches. He will be greatly missed,,, This is a Brass Guild Lily on a base he made for Audrey Paull (The Master of the Guild's wife at that time) when he was around 80, she kindly donated it to the Guild as it is our emblem, and is currently used as a trophy which is presented in tribute to our 'unsung heroes', that support and assist without any other recognition, and without whose support the Guild would not function as well as it does. This is the only pic I could find of a piece of work Lu made during his working career And finally, with his 100th birthday card from Her Majesty the Queen, and cutting his cake with his son and one of his daughters Goodbye Lu, the anvil will ring for you !
