January 4, 200719 yr Was rummageing around in my resource pile today,...found an old 2 5/16 trailer-hitch ball....got to loking at itand thought"gee,..if the bolt-shank on this was square it would make a nice hardy tool....."
January 4, 200719 yr Strix I have one of those welded to a truck spindle bolted down to a stump, works great as a tinners ball stake. Perfect for working on the curves in sheet metal bowls or armor. Jens
January 4, 200719 yr I have several in different sized hitch balls, I just wait for the local surplus store to put them on sale and pick one up every now and then. I have one welded to on the end of a peice of pipe that is welded to piece of heavy plate that I use on my lay out table for light sheetmetal work.
January 4, 200719 yr I made a swag out of a ball hitch following Jerry Carrolls BP0047 on candle cups and pans. It works great. I have attached the link below.http://www.iforgeiron.com/Blueprints/BP0047Candle_pans_cups_06/BP0047_Candle_pans_cups_06.htm John
January 4, 200719 yr Just about anytime I find one with the curved top---no flat space---at the fleamarket for a buck or two I pick it up, got one for the hardy, one mounted on a long bar, one for the screw press---having balls of steel can help you do a lot of things when you are a smith.
January 4, 200719 yr Thomas well put! lol. I can't seem to spot any as of yet that are not without flat spots. I assure you the moment I find one it will be heading home with me! Peyton
