April 20, 201115 yr Does anyone know a source for a replacement handle for a Tom Clark or Hofi hammer? Or the wood that Tom used for the handles?
April 20, 201115 yr Personally I'm liking White Oak. Any stable hardwood with appropiate grain orentation will work. Cosidering they are glued in poly- you may have to make it up yourself. Eye size will not fit "conventional" hammer handles.
April 20, 201115 yr According to Hofi The wood I use is mostly '' epea'' very hard and tough wood and hard ''maple''. Hickory is not available in Israel other wise I would use it. A carpenter which is a friend of mine cuts the wood to planks 1-1/16 x 1-3/4 x 12''.
April 20, 201115 yr Sam I am happy to assist. I have some quartersawn white oak tha has been air drying for four years now. I would be happy to make you a new handle and ship it off to you ( I have a Hofi hammer that I can copy.) PM me if you are interested.
April 20, 201115 yr Sam you live in new england lots of good wood there. Just need to shape it with a rasp to fit.
April 20, 201115 yr Sam doesn't live in New England, he lives in New York. Plenty of good wood there too though. Ipe is now relatively common in areas of high end homes. It is extremely tough, very durable and resistant to weathering. It is commonly used for decking. Special caution must be used when working Ipe. The dust is poisonous and can cause rashes even externaly.
April 21, 201115 yr Sam, when you get to PV you will find plenty of hickory handle blanks under the back table in the old studio. Or tell me what you need and I'll bring it to Ashokan. I have hickory and ash (enough to make a few thousand handles).
