matto
hi i have a hammer question for everyone i found a 2.5lb straight peen hammer that has a 5/8" hole drilled parelle to the peen on the peen side of the hammer and was wondering why it is there. maybe for more head weight? the marking that i can read on the hammer is "BELL SYSTOMES" matt o
wolfshieldrx
I've been told the hole was used as a wrench to twist in the screw-in steps used on utility poles. bart
PICKETTR
That marking should be "BELL SYSTEMS" and it is a lineman's hammer. And yes, the hole is for use as a wrench. The lineman would start a step/screw with the hammer end and run it in with the wrench hole. They are not in use very much except in rural areas as the linemen would much rather use a bucket truck or ladder.:D
ThomasPowers
It makes a fine smithing hammer though if the weight is right for you. I finally picked one up as my Father, Uncle, Sister, Wife and I have worked for the Bell System at sometime over the years---waited till none of us were working for them anymore though. Bentiron1946
I picked mine up off the shoulder of the road. I think the lineman forgot to stow it before he drove off. Nice hammer.
