Yes just not as good as a clean screw thread; however I have seen vises used until the screw thread was *sharp* at the top!  It's like mileage on a car---can you drive a car with 100,000 mile on it?  Sure; it's just not going to last as long as one with only 20,000 and you should *not* pay the same price for it as the one with 20,000!
