Rob Browne
I have just "aquired" a couple of stainless steel sinks that I would like to use to make some billets. Are there any special problems with forge welding stainless (temperature, flux, etc) or is it similar to other steels? Is it worth even trying? Thanx in advance
Steve Sells
its covered a bit in the knife stickies, Main thing is to keep out air, as the nature of stainless is the same chrome oxides that stop rusting will also stop welding. Fluoride based flux helps, but its very toxic too, good luck Edited August 7, 2009 by mod07
Rob Browne
Thanks Steve, think I will take them to the scrap yard. Don't want to introduce any more hazards to the hobby than necessary.
Sweany
Superior Flux & MFG. Co. check out what they say about forge borax. I don't remember seeing that before.
pkrankow
Sinks are "mild" and not very hardenable since they are drawn metal. I'm sure there is a use for them. Might make nice slack tubs. Phil
