Rob Browne
Haven't heard of that one but give it a go and tell us what happened. That way I don't have to try :)
ThomasPowers
I've read of it in old machinist books on heat treating small parts
Charlotte
Soap today is different than it was in "olden time". Something like Ivory or Octagon laundry soap in the U.S. rather than face soap or deoderant soap. Dish detergent is not the same as "Soap". The super quench formulas use detergents and surfactants. It seems to me that the anything on the blade would burn off but maybe the sodium/carbon left would have some affect?

longhunter
Rub ivory soap on blade before heat treat is suppose to reduce the amount of scale that will form .

Charlotte
borax is flux and soap isnt it? Borax is an inorganic mineral. Soap is a collecton of organic compounds composed mostly of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and sodium. Soap burns in a fire. Borax give up water of hydration, then bound water and then melts in a forge fire. So no Borax is not soap.
