Chris Waldon
I'm going to forge an old file into a dagger tomorrow, and I plan to forge the shape and then use a file to form the actual cutting edge. Will this have any negative impact on the blade's strength or other properties? Thanks in advance!
Rich Hale
Not if you use good forging procedures and get the heat treat correct when it is all shaped.
ThomasPowers
Do a good anneal on it after forging to shape! Your proposal is a very common way to do it. Don't forget to leave the edge a bit thick before heat treat, it's a pain to reduce after heat treat but really helps control warping or cracking on the edge. bbehnke
It wouldn't hurt to grind the edges of the file before forging to remove any stress risers (to reduce the chance of it cracking).
Chris Waldon
what do you mean by "grind the edges of the file"? I've ground the teeth off. Is that what you mean?
bbehnke
Yes, I meant to grind the teeth.
