steel stock organization

Featured Replies

I've been trying to turn my shop space from a shop- tool, materials storage area into a shop.

I started by removing everything (almost) not needed for the task of forging and finishing knives. No small task.

So in the process I found the barrel, the bottom of a vacuum I dumped, and a real neat round thing (would make a nice hammer rack)
Anyway no biggee, just though I'd share and I love to post pics.

Might I suggest welding in a shelf for shorter cutoffs, probably just the front 1/3 would work out fine, and some cringle cans held on the outside, or old welding rod containers.

Mark, you're started on a slippery slope.. I've evolved to an outside rack for 20 foot stock, an inside leaning rack for 8 to 10 foot stock, a horizontal shelf for 1 through 8 foot pieces and another shelf for under 1 foot bits. I would love to scrap half of the smaller chunks, but think of all the decorative hooks one could make with 50 drops of half inch square 9 inches long. The affliction never goes away.

Hey Mike It's your fault . I got the idea to cut my 20'ers to 10's and store verticaly after my last visit to your shop. It's saved soo much wall space, but those littlte pieces are a bugger.

Don't use that thing as a hammer rack! That little topper could make your burn-barrel the best in the neighbourhood!

I use old steel wheelbarrow wheels for tong racks using what I find ever for the stands.

The barrel's nice but you may want to remove the bottom of it so if anything drops in you don't have to remove the top and then lean way down in to fish it out. (don't ask me how I know that one, there were no witnesses and I'll lie convincingly!)
