Titanium?

Featured Replies

Will some be so kind as to tell or give some info onTi, how work it.
Thanks True

Titanium works very nicely. It yeilds to the hammer like nothing else I've worked with. It does have a narrow forging range, but just heat it up again. It upsets easier than anything I've ever worked with. I don't know what profile you are working with, but my brother took some 9/16 round put it in the vice, localized a heat with a torch, hit it once, and it upset into a perfect sphere about 3/4 round for making tongs.

i am trying to be a bladesmith. I am old, but wet be hind the ear on this site.HeHe I have work with Ti but only in sheet 28-32ga.

Sorry, I'm not the one to talk to about that. I haven't worked with that profile, but I would imagine your forging range will be extremely narrow due to heat loss with that thin of material.

Naw Jeremy that is for earings. As BBBwas saying his brother was useing a 3/4 round. so it looks like you can buy larger stock. I wonder if one can change the ccolor.

Those were just a couple links I found by using the "search" feature here on IFI. I didn't read them completely. - I would think after getting to your desired shape - you could polish then heat color it. - JK

Ti make lousy blades, you can cut a Ti blade with a plain medium to high carbon steel blade with no problem. It doesn't hold an edge well.

You can heat colour it after grinding and polishing or annodize it to wild colours---gold, electric blue, etc.

Did I mention it make a lousy knife? I've forged an eating set out of Ti for blacksmithing potlucks and for camping---it's light and can be chucked in the dishwasher with no problem. (also Ti tongs, a pipe tool, penannular brooch, etc...)
