  1. Hey guys, Does anyone know of someone who does their own independent foundry work? Backyard style? I've seen plans for building your own small smelter/foundry but have never had the guts to do it. But I have something I would like to have cast but I don't have the market of buyers to pay the small lot prices it will cost me to get it done by a big foundry to have much if any profit left over. I would appreciate any help or response.
  2. Hey guys, I recently moved to Virginia and I am in need of some coal or coke. Does anyone know of a good source in Richmond? thanks in advance
  3. I had an old Fisher 100 pound anvil that had ZERO ring, just a dull thunk, but it rebounded nicely. I sold it after I bought my 180 pound Peter Wright. Well, I worked on my Peter Wright anvil this last saturday and I have to say...I don't like the ring. It's loud, it's annoying, and probably harmful to the ears. I'll be wearing ear plugs when I hammer in the future. I want to be able to hear my grandchildren call me papaw. lol W
  4. You wouldn't be talking about Chuck Stone of the Master's Forge would you? I've gone to two classes with him and learned a lot from him. He also helped me build my forge, and if it is, I know what Anvil you're talking about. lol W
  5. I'm glad I read this, I have a Peter Wright that needs some attention in a bad way. So you're saying don't weld it up and grind it down. Simply grind it down and weld on a new plate?
  6. Tapped on that lip of the gear box, and it popped right off. Cleaned off the gears and the gear box, brushed them off with a wire brush on my dewalt drill. WD-40, then some lithium grease, tightened everything back down and put it back on the stand. Spins much better without all the rust and ash buildup. doesn't make that gosh awful shuddering noise anymore. I should be forging again soon! thanks Thomas. W
  7. must I always live 4 states away!!! lol I just hope someone gets the goods that appreciates them. lol W
  8. Hey guys, Since I signed up, I've built a nice forge, bought a couple of anvil's and several sets of tongs. I've done some work, but my blower rattles from time to time. I took it all appart except the gearbox, I removed the one screw I saw, but there seems to be a pin on the top of the gear box and I don't know how to remove it so I can get in, clean it up and re-grease it. Anyone know? FYI it's a buffalo. I'll put a pic up tonight if you think this would help. Weldon
  9. Well, just wanted to introduce myself and say hi. My name is Weldon and I'm just getting started in this most honored endeavor of shaping the black iron. I'm sitting in with a blacksmith this weekend for 8 hours of instruction into the basics, so I'm as a raw and useless as a persimon in early spring right now. I have volunteered at a local living history museum where I can go in and pound away and practice for free as one of their blacksmiths. Though that's a name/title that I do not deserve at all as of yet. I hope in time that does not remain true. I will do my best not to ask typical newbie questions and will peruse the old posts. Please have patience with me and I will do my best not to be a nag. Looking forward to learning from you all Weldon
