  1. . I was taught to build a forge here. Now I'm stuck with 5" of 1.5" cable and part of a newer burner melted into a hard puddle at the bottom of my forge. Is there anyway to remove the metal. It was literal burn in for new matrikote. If I can just rematrikote over the steel that easy and cool with me. Does burned steel in a forge hurt anything. Does it make toxic air? My last question is about cracks in my mortar layer around the forge opening. I'm worried about the bottom layer of the lining that's kaowool does it escape from cracks. I've got a little one who is great company. Thanks for any info. I hope this is a real place to post. I'm heeding mod42 advisement Tx
  2. Am I safe gas wise there's a 1" gap on each end. Tx
  3. Ok, thanks. I was worried you were warning me about wood rot mushrooming. Oil does shine the handles too. Tranny is an abbreviation for automatic transmission fluid, steel, sand and a wooden handle feels so organic Maybe posting this in my post is erroneously posting, but could I build up kastolite to cover 50-60 percent on door hole into about a 2x4 opening on the ends. Everyone has me worried about gas buildup, but folks have suggested firebrick that I got today. Tx Obviously this would limit the size of what I could get in and out. I'd plan heights accordingly. tx
  4. Was the mushroom part referring to water soaked wood or the stuff swelling from oil? Many thanks for your replies
  5. And if on topic,(though placement is accepted as errant) what is blo and lps 3?. Is it ok to hammer w very light rust? I'm only doing cable and I think tiny bits of rust show in etch after etching???( No flakes or chips just surface rust)
  6. A hammer tip you all probably know. If your hammers are rusting between use, fill up a plastic bus tub with a $5 bag of sand. I started with a bottle of motor oil, 5w30 but it was cataclysmic. 30 weight was better but I knew it wasnt catamount as its grimeyness wasn't an attractive proposition when seeking motivation to go outside. I switched to atf (automatic transmission fluid) and only used half a bottle. I mixed in the atf with a stick and I was done. By setting your hammers in this sand they'll get no moisture. If space is tight, you can use a 5 gallon bucket buts it's tougher. A bus tub has plenty of room so when you put your hammers in the tub you can use a scoop to dump sand on the hammer head. Sand is even a nice way to keep the faces shiny. This literally works in the Atlantic's daily salt spray. ( And everything rusts here.) All right, that's my cuss free idea. ( Except for the time all heck broke loose with 5w30, Ive never felt any slickness on handle. Sometimes my hands feel softer! ) Finally, it only works if you use mobil1. Quaker state leads to at's overheating and sam's club car juice dried out. Pig Mobil
  7. Recently I've received more help from this site and it's members than I've been able to process. Thanks a million guys I have 2 questions: Is there any way to check if ridgidizer worked? I dyed it and got it evenly coated but it probably got hotter than red when I set it with fire (this should happen at first firing of forge to actually use it right. I know if it feels compacted, but everytime I touch leftover plain blanket scraps it makes me doubt things. Plain feels rigidized if that makes sense Second thing is I left 1'" of blanket out of the ends to make a patio/porch. I plan on sealing with kastolite then matrikote. I can do the extra 1" in those materials. Will this work or should I cut it. If I cut it do I need to rerigidize the cut line? * Bonus ? what happens if ridgidizer gets cooked past "red?'ve got a rare afternoon off with energy so your Input is greatly appreciated. ThAnks for everyone's time
  8. CTToday's tip Make sure you're paying more than just a first and last name match on PayPal in you're paying on PayPal! Anyone, irretrievably, can be photographed and paid for matrikote But that's all ok here
  9. Morning guys. If I wrote a cuss I'm sorry. I thought I wrote the burro word in a private chat w Frosty. I guess I can't tell where stuff goes. Or maybe they read chats too? Indefinately!!! The bain of every often assumed tbi's life. And impulse control, I have some. Haha. To all reading please enjoy. I think finding matrikote had me delirious. Sorry all for cussing this appears to be a public post. At least I know one thing I'm not acting like. 5000 g. Or I can't tell yal.
  10. It seems like I get angry everytime I'm presented with anything. I sound like Ricky Ricardo with a southern drawl when I yell so it takes me back to living by the murmans. Thanks and sincere apologies for acting unappreciative . I owned up to bring an xxxxxxxx in first post but why am I suspected of tbi? (Joking) Did somebody on the forum give me a sponge bath? HIPPA protects me and you. (Not joking) (well a little) Tx
  11. Thank you sir. I'll use my internet savvy to try and send the video I watched. It'll take a few. Thanks for such a kind offer
  12. Thanks guys. I watched a video(finally) on tuning burners but the video had a big debate if you could delean a forge with burner out or installed and I reAlized again what a big world it is. I was showing my optimistic side. Tx
  13. Thank you very much. Between thinking I needed bricks and not needing it was unclear. Would a brick still be a necessary thing on the bottom over this coating to protect it or is the coating a working surface? Will the effect on a cheap brick be only wearing away or could it explode? (I've still got 2 brand new tractor supply fire bricks I was gonna use as baffles) Tx for help, Will fire brick baffles definitely get my fire less lean. I want to place 1 order today w everything I need Tx Thanks ifcw. May e it's regular but the flux seems to become hard clumps all over the bottom when cooked and squirted on the floor of the forge. It doesn't scrape off in full heat unless I it's really scrubbed. Last time it took the brick w it. Almost feels like it welded with metal a little Tx again
  14. Sounds right. I think if I ever heard it firsthand, it would have been related to a messy room. Noun or adjective. I knew a messy kid once
  15. Update... My more rural NC wife got cattyrumpus immediately. This mornings brilliant deduction (still un-internetted) is that wumpus has to be related to rompus, romping or romp. R's seem difficult to pronounce for mid to Eastern Europeans. (All wild guesses) Tx for everyone's help
  16. "Don't look at it *hit* *it*!" All right Sir, last time I thought I knew what you were typing I got moderated TP. Still am. It feels like a jersey hug from yuz guys. ( Beware moderator, I might be getting triicked here). Cattywompus, never used it, based on a lack of simple Latin I'd say disorganized, disheveled or an agitated appearance. I will check how I did on Internet and post an immediate reason why if I'm wrong. Never ever used it but I feel oddly confident, like whan my gas tank get so hot so close to the forge. It feels so peaceful Tough reading fefinition but think I was close!! That's why the wrights we're to embarrassed to try Ohio flying
  17. I've got a new kaowool blanket for a lil 5x9x7 single burner forge Everyone has helpfully told me to enhance this plain blanket w kiln wash ridgidizer. Does anyone know 1 what quantities of each do I need 2 Do they make a kit 3 where buy the kit 4 with, blanket, ridgidizer, bricks and kiln wash do I have every single product needed to start and finish job. There's a water squirter in the kitchen. There always seems to be 1 more thing necessary wherever I find myself. Still got tons to study and learn but I wanted to get order in asap and get it headed my way. Wire rope arrives Tuesday Thanks and I'm still processing all the info my last question yielded me. Thanks for helping And 4 sides total or 3? Are Ttractor supply co's firebricks are ok? They're on sale this week for 4.99 I think. Been using a replacement one on the bottom under flame and it seems to "work" ok*. ( *Many helping have said fire might be lean) If yal have a chance Tx
  18. The changing only 1 thing at a time is wisdom
  19. Jaylegged was old ladies line who didn't like Hoosiers either in in josey wales. Just being an I can't find the donkey icon on here. I've got 6 full pages printed from this post. They're not in the binder yet but I've got the Ziploc ready. Thanks again to all who helped, especially catching the kaowool debacle. I think the forge kit did come with red squirt and a 4x4 pack of powder. Might have been 2 juices but I didn't know what it was so I pitched it out and those Chinese boxes never se to have instructions so I never knew it was dangerous ( nothing against China)
  20. One of the reasons I'd switched to cable was because I knew the scales were dangerous if you made it that far. Jaylegged huh? Wasn't that blue? My childhood was of full of my great grandmothers stories of Falmouth and the likkin (?) River and Mckinneysburg. She was a McKinney.
  21. Hidden BK i had been told by stainless dealer/pusher that Peter's was the place to use. All the nice stainless knives I had ready got subsequently over sanded so they never got sent in, but on the phone Peter's seemed really sharp and aware of what they're doing.( Even the phone ladies were full of answers!) I don't work there. appreciate the tip though. I swore off non stainless the night I ordered it and started my search for 4" bars of cra154. Elevator shaft doesn't even go to the top 8-10 floors Cussing is bad.
  22. Yesterday, someone was being very helpful and suggested a bowl swage to weld cable ends. Do you just pound it in the bowl and the newly fraying ends stay 2" ball instead of 4" ball, do you just wedge it In recess/hole dead end it inand hit other end w a hammer, do you use long strips on side to cradle cable and the top matching piece as a hammer down shaper of 1" going to 3/4 inch or does none of this matter if I don't hit a hot enough welding temp. I currently don't hit it I think. Tx guys All great stuff
  23. The stainless part is true, just wanted a fair representation of me. Tx for all your help I have ruined 4" of 3/4" stainless but I guess it's obvious I never got anywhere near the necessity temps.
  24. Thank you. Sad part is it's mainly me mumbling on post but there is really good stuff from every body. Tx again yal
