  1. Other reason. I got some cable going a few times by pulling the cable to right under the flame and melted itbut the melted debris had gotten sticky in forge1, i nicknamed him Fibley. And kids these days wont admit being 9. You gotta sneak questions like that Thanks all
  2. Now thats just being ugly. I learned nothing but forge stuff before (fyi they only last about 1 year outside) and have a double burner coming now. Just a cheapie. My mom is in her 70s. What age could i be? If the guy says $500 a tack is that what i pay or is there a going rate? I remember buttering. So how do you power it. Or if i had a electrician how would they or them do it? Thanks all
  3. Dont know . Im. A year ago every single body told me to get a mig at ht and now everbodies like whoa. Will that buzz box need a special plug or will wall 110 work. Im not sure if there is a welding store What does a welding store look like? Maybe there is one on my walk. Im in nc too. Is there a chain of welding stores. I will be so embarrassed if theres one on my walk Tx And i dont like gettiing free info from mom and pop stores to just by at ht dirt cheap and online. Thats just me And the watt thing was just a mistyping. Its the weird autocorrect
  4. Will any buzz box stick run just plugged into wall? Tx
  5. Does a buzz box stick need more than regular amperage from the wall. It sounds good and like what im looking for. It seems as if i ran the cable off a new breaker to only 1 wellder it should be as safe a house wiring. Any ideas how much to pay for single tacks on 1.5 and 2". Thanks I dont know what it shows but i have a plug in meter too Tx
  6. Hey frosty, hope all is well.both very helpful. If you had a mig and someone asked you to tack cable, would you do it and how much per tack? I was thinking about craigslisting (i dont own it) for mig owner to tack but i wont afford their whole mig welders. So where you put a 40 watt breaker? On big box outside. Ive touched that big box at a previous trailer i lived in. I use to get 240 by running two 110 leads. That work Thanks These questions are why i fully admitted not knowing anything welding in previous posts. Im gonna have my mom use whatever i get if i cant do it myself (embarrassing huh?) Tx Ive got a years worth (about 5) of easy softball questions im gonna ask soon.
  7. Is this "sealing" the end or should i switch terminology. Tx Dont worry, i dont need to learn welding, just heating cable ends Tx
  8. Wow. Thanks guys. I definitely want as small and single unit as possible. This will take a day to read, take notes etc. Thanks again. Is mig a mythical arch welder? Tx Pigsticker Thanks so mu h for power tip. That is a typical mistakei make. If i find a 20 amp outlet can i just run a cord? Could i just put a bigger fuse inside house box. Many thanks
  9. I still havent youtubed mig. Can i just melt lots of small areas.( i guess $$$ models do big areas) and is there a size mig that is too small? Or does mig mean itll work? Thanks for your help guys
  10. Hey guys. Hope all have been well. Several times ive had it suggested to buy a mig to zap the ends of steel cable. I thought i remembered them talking about cheapest hf, but im scared to buy something useless. Is there a figure or number i can check for to make sure its strong enough to zap 1.5-2" normal cable? I have no intention on ever using this for any other reason, so nice is a luxury. Piĝsticker Im trying to hammer cable on the ends so it wont just wear away and i can twist when it gets hot
  11. Does anyone have new year advice on loading 3' of cable into a 9" forge to weld while holding by hand. Like pushing 18" in one side and pulling last 18" from the back of forge. I can get to both sides of forge. It's on the floor now to fight extreme warpage. Really want to hold the greasy cable by hand so I can spin it and don't wanna burn my hand glovelessly. Many thanks and happy new year.
  12. Many thanks for all the answers to my questions. And you spotted the 2100 degree misquote or misunderstanding. Everyone can go back to normal now. I always forget that flux is a coating as well as bonding "assistant"., I guess by preventing oxidation. Trying to learn on cable has me at a very different way of thinking. Between my context and limited metal/forgingucation and unwavering optimism this stuff is getting fun. Even had fake news! Pig S. Ticker Happy new year all
  13. Thanks for the thorough info. I was hoping I'd found a famous but forgotten medieval technique. I'm not using canisters ( no welding gun) just cable so I'm on the wrong side of this. Do I need to hit the 2650 if I can melt the steel "to" the nickel. Can't I make the steel sticky enough alone? Also, I know sparking is the steel burning. Does it significantly degrade the steel to achieve this effect. If I always start welding on first spark is that too so late? Lastly, what's the best way to fill a green bean sized hole in a 1/3" billet and when do I fill it?. And finally, what will identify burned steel? Is there a thing to look for before working the material. Many thanks, Pig S. of Topsail
  14. Velegski- really appreciate the tips. Especially the nickle breathing thing. That was no where near my radar and I even go the mouth guard piece so I'm thrilled to have somewhere else to wear it. In your answer you covered my next 4 questions hoping to validate the attempt. Bully. S sells- I'm still looking for the guy in a safari suit to do free welding on my cable ends you sent me out for in my last post. ( Remember the boonie hat? Socks and sandals...) Plus, theres plenty of people to do the basics. All I need is your belief that I can really do it. I'd take that any day over advice. I've got it don't I, your blessings?? Don't leave me hanging.... Tx No nickel or pennies, some art for everyman, especially NOT the lay man Pigus s Thanks for help Btw nickle melts at 4800
  15. Does anyone have reason to believe I could or could not not dump spoons of powder nickel in the cable when I open it for cleaning. Many thanks, I've never seen nickel powder in non advertisement form. Bet it's $$$. Tx Does powder always have to go in canisters, of can you lightly coat weldable colored steel and retain it for design purposes. Tx
  16. Thanks for your replies. If you come up with him doing anything ,"different" let me know. Nickel seems easier to pretend with. I know the melting point of nickel is closer to steel than copper, I hope, so ok. I don't have surpluses of nickel yet but I'll get it. Is there any old enough nickel coins that I could use? Pre-1967 etc. Oh well, no penny excitement this weekend. Take care all, Pigus S
  17. Thanks for quick response I was hoping it'd be easy. Thank you on behalf of my forge for keeping it copper free. That would work w nickel right? ( Dont have any nickel pipes I know of) Many thanks again, you saved a forge undue misery. Pigus S No problem here with Japanese folks at all Could I braise my cable ends with copper and have it hold?
  18. was thinking of starting by setting my welds on the two ends of a bright wire steel cable 2' or so. If I set the end welds, can I loosen the cable and drop .5" x6" strips inside the cable around the core with any results. This would cook flat in a propane forge, the cable is clean and I've heard it has to be flipped regular. many thanks to responders and readers. Would the copper ruin my new matrikote over kastolite forge interior more than steel? Does burning copper go poisonous? Thanks
  19. And no o need to send repeated messages to my poor inbox my "cable blade things" aforementioned are not for sale! Realistically, offers over $1500 would receive consideration. Stupid knife makers ( cause I've made 2 now) probably dismiss others efforts too. If anyone ever needs help with any wood's makeup and working characteristics give me try. My wood knowledge is arguably better than my metal no-ledge. ( That's why I'm on a metal page.) Haha Oink e oink
  20. Is thinking in a box like living in a box? Said it and did it w no memory of it? I saw a person walking before, gotta guess they're still about where they were. IM NOT CALLING IT PRETTY BUT INSTEAD CALL IT WELD #2 not impressive and very not impossible. My family isn't artistic. The little guy is from 1.5" cable and it's less than 1" wide Einstein spoke of great spirits. We're like blind old horses Piggly Savante Ticker I'm not pierced for 3/4 or 1" cable stuff. This blade doesn't cut but I'll make it rip and tear
  21. How big a spotch of weld would come off 1 zap with an "ig" if you just pulled the trigger 1 time. Real question being if I've got to seal a 2" cable end and might be 15 min YouTube ig trained, is it gonna take 30 min tor cover the whole end or less than 4 min? Many thanks. Discovered my smoking was pieces of the end of the cable that fall or fell off. Good lesson in getting the forge high enough to see in. How high is that for a forge? Baked? Haha. Thanks again for everyone's help
  22. TP is hitting after the initial weld "refining a weld "or are you suggesting I read "refining a weld"? Tried to type it in but didn't see anything obvious I also tried to cross reference w "101" but no luck Thanks PST Sorry for confusion
  23. I'm not sure why a gas flame wouldn't seal an end of a cable if its cut about a 70 degree angle and move the heat slowly. The wire won't just "fuse" ? Like liquidize it for just a second. I called around and there is a guy for 90$ an hour who'll weld the ends for me, but that's real money. I can't offer to mow his yard for 90$ and I pay less for medical care w my insurance than his hourly fee and my doctor visits include a stop at doc's treasure chest. Plus, I'd have to drop it off to explain what to do and that's not my fortes. Pig S Great Tuesday all. Tx for help
  24. Many thanks Once woke up from a 21 day coma convinced I'd been shot. I felt around for bullet holes and then got a mental vision cutting off my fingers in an accident on the chopsaw and being electrocuted, all the way to death. (Kinda weird, accepted) I've never known anything about electricity so it seemed fair enough to me. I'm not scared of electricity anymore but what can I say if anything igs me? (Mig or tig or anything electric weldish) Willing to admit my limitations.I've seen pics of artistic mig and Tig welds that have assured me it's on another level that i can't even process the look of. There was a weld that looked like beautiful iridescent braided rope. Finally got my pressure back above 12 ( as opposed to 7 psi) so the forge is amazingly welding "more" and accommodatingly. For now. If hammered steel is good, how much is enough? I do still use my chopsaw and love the number 10. A lot. Pig S Ticker I did take a new cutting disc on angle grinder to my poor knife today and can say the grain in the hardened cable blade came out magnificent. it also is near impervious to my grinder. Used bout 3/4 of a blade to angle grind a lightly welded 2" cable in two. (Close to 2 min) Wow. It was a $4 grinder wheel too. ( Not the $2 discs)
  25. Is there any reason to hit metal even one time after it welds? Does it make it better? Is there a difference in pounded steel vs just welded? Many tx and sorry bout my four letter indiscretion above. Luckily Gregg and mod 43 are ever vigilante for you, the reader.
