  1. my forge is called a railroad forge I cut the legs so the forge is the same height as the anvil so less movement from forge to the anvil
  2. Kelly there was a article in the woods magazine on making a babbit bearing if you would send email to the woods magazine they could tell you what month issue it is the are rebuilding a old table saw that they are installing new babbits on the unit
  3. sucker rod is the pipe that is inside the well casing that sucks water up to your house to your pressure tank
  4. I buy my steel from a iron business because when you buy steel farm store I usually pay for a 6ft piece as much as a 20 foot piece just curious
  5. do you have a farm well business close around? if you do ask him if he has sucker rod thats good punch I use it also check if any of your horse people they use sucker rod for there arena fenches, and after you hammer the tip use old car oil to quench it dip it slow not fast other was it will get brittle and break.

  7. on the anvil the beak part which way do you point it when you are working at the anvil the beak to the right or left if you are right handed?

I started 4 years ago went to pba meeting help from members enjoyed it so much that I went to school Hofi had a class at clarks blacksmith school and took that and help from Jr also has helped have a shop of my own. which I practice and try to use patience. nothing comes fastThe people of pba help me a lot on blacksmith projects

  12. when you go to the meeting at Burlington they have it at centaur store,you can look at all the good stuff.they also have a good book slection they have a good one for railroad track for use as a anvil.Been there 3years ago lot of interesting demo also.
  13. be careful I made a metal cutting out of a table saw you have to clamp down the piece your cutting and cut slow pull a 3/4 horse down quite a bit.also you want to make sure the motor is not a open motor go inside the motor put duck tape over mine.
  14. another idea school have overhead projectors that they sell cheap at auctions. just put your drawing on the overhead metal on the wall just start drawing onto the metal
  15. check out auto garages they use silica sand for there sand blasting to clean car parts and harbor freight also have it

I just buy the 20 ft piece of steel and do not have it cut.because i figure i,m going to use it sometime on a different job. my truck I use a ladder rack and I fasten two pices of 4'' pvc glue together one cap off then on the other end I have a screw in plug which makes it 20 ft slide the steel and screw the plug on and drive away.

I tryed to forge a punch out of car spring steel, made it to a 1/4 inch at the punch,question do you make it long and then taper it, or do you make it short the punch is used for 1/4 inch steel. after i made it i heated it up to bright red and put the point in the water and stirred it until it turn purple 1/2 way and then smerage it in the water. used it got locked up and broke the shank when i tryed and reheat after broke it split all to pieces what did i do wrong:confused::

I use the same method by using newspaper not the one has the ads on just the printed paper i crush it together then put a hole in the center of it then start it add little coke burned coal with a little air keep on adding coke until going. after you get done forge add some green coal so you have coke for next time
  19. What are my opitions on change from a hand crank blower,change to a electric blower. I seen a while back a person made a blower out of a clothes dryer, and also need to be able to shut of the air.

  21. The site that rick help me a lot, was just welding mild steel,1/8 inch thick I just was not getting a good weld looked like a pile of mess, also what is different between argon and moongone gas.thank you gerald

  23. how to organize shop is kind of up to you, My cords that I use all the time are for grinders and hand tools, for welders I make a recepaticle for it close to the location. On service size a lot has to be what outlets you use constantly.Because you can't operate more then one equipment at a time. and to answer your question how I organize my cord I use a tire rim have lot of them around to store my cords. I be a electrician put me position that I put outlets where they are need. My shop is not that big. That i have 60 amp service for trip hammer and welder.
  24. there a scrape yard in Dorchester Nebr that is hard to find you can walk around there, but most places won't let you walk around because of libilitys reason.waianvil
