  1. 1. Yes I sure will and 2. It is mild steel, I tried to model it after a gladiolus but it got a little lost
  2. Yea I know it's not much but I have learned a lot and I am still super proud of it. Also I was 12 and have no formal training and all the work was done with a hammer an angle grinder(even the handle) and it is xxxx but I love that xxxx..... but it is xxxx. I am working on another on right now. P.S. no heat treat it is soft but sharp.
  3. Well its sharp and you can cut stuff and it looks like a sword. I use it as a wall hanger but I think you could count it as a sword.(its a little tough but I sure learned a lot)
  4. Yeah you gotta be careful with stuff like that... and hot steel too I guess
  5. I'm sure I will get a few of my own in due time.
  6. Man you guys are beat up. I am new to this so I dont have any scars except one on my hand from a hot glue gun. I am now working on some knife tongs but I am sorry to hear about all your battle scars.
  7. Sorry I am 13 and I am gonna disagree with you guys so please don't kick me out. But I just started last year and I only really make knifes so I am probably the most inept blacksmith ever but I also made a sword it is just a wall hanger and I learned a lot. I think that you can make as many knifes and swords as you want as long as you dont want to do more than cut paper.
  8. I have read a lot on the internet and I know all the basic stuff but I was just wondering if there was anyone out there that knows a lot about it and has some special tricks or something specialized to swords.
  9. I want to make a sword. I have made some knives and a small but rough sword and now want a new challenge. I have a nice piece of 1/4 O-1 and I just want to know what is the best and easiest way to heat treat it (I am going to make a 35 inch longsword with no fuller and any other general sword making tips would be awesome thank you.)
  10. Thank you for all the replies. I guess I expected what you said but I just had to ask. I live in a rental houst so I cant build anything that I cant take down every day. Thanks anyway.
  11. I know having a forge in a basement is generally a bad idea. okay a horrible life ending choice. but I was wondering if, with the right fireproofing, ventilation and a little bit of common sense it would be possible and work. also how much ventilation would I need?
  12. Thank you guys for all the replies. I ended up buying wolf jaw tongs and I love them! and I also made some out of rebar. they are not perfect but they do the trick.
  13. Thank you so much for all your replies I try to make knives and tent to use either half inch round stock or leaf spring.
  14. Hi. I just started Blacksmithing and I need some tongs. I only have enough money for one pair. what kind of tongs would you recomend for just all purpose tongs
