Using BREAD as a foundry
I thought it was interesting and I don't mind sharing stuff like this with you all. I personally think this is a cheap alternative to refractory, how much will a loaf of bread cost you? It could cost you pennies if you already have the baking stuff. of just a dollar or two depending on where you live or shop. Kaleb,

Using BREAD as a foundry
Pyrolized Bread Metal Casting Foundry Well earlier today I found this video posted yesterday by one of the guys I subscribe to on YouTube. He isn't the most safety conscious person, but he is an experienced machinist. The entire set up should of been outside, but its his house right? Its an interesting concept and he understands it and enjoys nerding out on the scientific to those of us who are not as, well you know...

Old Diesel Forge
If I were you I wouldn't scrap anything that comes off that. Because maybe with enough searching you could possibly find that you could fix up the diesel, idk.

Small scale retort?
If you were to place wood small enough to fill the can I don't know whether or not you would get big enough chunks to use in the forge since a 1" 'round' piece of charcoal does burn rather quickly and anything smaller is practically useless in lasting long enough in the forge from my experience. And I have seen many ratios on the wood to charcoal size but 2/3 to 1/2 the size of the original piece of wood, but that may vary. But in theory, you can make char out in an Altoids tin if you wanted to. Take my word as a bit of salt, because I am teaching myself in the same area. -Kaleb

One power tool, one hammer, and one pair of tongs, what would it be?
Ok, instead of going outside and dying of heatstroke from the combined heat of the sun and forge (it's also really humid and buggy). I decided to come up with a fun but useful article. Ok I have to ask you if you only had one power tool, one hammer, and one pair of tongs what would you have in your shop? I ask this for all the beginners out there that are starting out with limited resources or don't know where to start (I myself included). Also I thought it would be fun to see the differences between people. Let the responses roll in!

Looks very poor man so I like it.

Another JABOD
Well, I might have to switch to coal now that I know that Tractor Supply Co. carries coal. So will I need the extra depth if I do?

Another JABOD
I think I have decided upon either building up the forge to the top of the walls as they sit or cut down the side walls flush with the pre-existing clay.

Another JABOD
I'm sorry if I came across as rude or anything. I had thought that in the original post I had mentioned this is just for small items, but I did not. And I get what you mean by heating up the middle of a 3' bar and how that might be difficult. Since this is my first forge and maybe I am very unexperienced how would you go about fixing this problem? Becuase maybe I'm thinking too narrowly as I do sometimes. I was thinking that maybe I should center the fire pot a bit then go with the traditional bowl shape for the pot? I don't know. Also, what do you mean by computer case sides? (I am quite curious what you meant by this) But regardless thanks for helping out even tough I was quite rude.

Another JABOD
Well, pardon me on forgetting to add the details because you guys alway are asking for them I have decided to stick with charcoal even though I might use wood every now and then. As I said I don't plan on forging anything big or every day on this forge as I don't have the experience to do so. And for the base material, I have a piece of sheet rock on top of wood so I say its pretty fire resistant. And I will look into allocating more clay for slanting the firepot.

Another JABOD
With the help of certain people on this forum, I have decided to take my forge down the dirt path and build my take on JABOD forges. I started this project just earlier today and just came up with the design I have as I went. Take in mind that this is my first forge and the first one I built as well. It is of 3/4x8 material cut to make a 12x24 inch box. I wanted to make it as small as possible since I am just starting and I don't need anything big for my first forge and as many people have pointed out if I need to make a bigger forge I can just use the materials from this forge and put them in a bigger box. The forge is that of a side blast configuration which might be temporary but who knows. It is currently only going to run off a hair dryer just because I already have one. I want to add some sheet metal plating on the wood closest to the pit but I do not know if that is really necessary. Also how deep should the pit be and how much clay should be in between the wood base and the fire?

A simple side blast forge
So I started making the JABOD forge and haven't really decided on a shape for the pit. I was thinking maybe the tried and true circle pit or maybe a more teardrop shaped. And btw it is a side blast forge. Kaleb

Je parle un peu francais, mais pas le francais canadien. The little my French teacher taught me but I can still deny a French-Canadian, I think?

A simple side blast forge
With the JABOD what is the recommended depth of the pit? And what about the other dimensions on a minimum?
