Not really
I know. That's why I said "kind of"...
I've been reading up on submarines. Not for me. String test, creaking and groaning, etc... No way out.... Kind of reminds me of cave spelunkers. No thanks. I'd prefer the ocean spray in my face...

No, Frosty, that was Al Stephens image. I just was trying to re-size it for him. But here's an odd one:
Publisher
W. Davison Alnwick
Description
Anonymous undated engraving which depicts a scene familiar in the era before professional dentistry, when suffering patients sought the services and tools of the village smith for purposes of tooth extraction. Reproduced from an original engraving “Printed and Published by W. Davison Alnwick.” Original piece measures 22 X 29 cm. -
Dang. Kind of wrong again.

....at the time.

Actually, no I wouldn't have a better solution....

I am glad to see preservation of things like this. Being an old salt, that I am. Although I think batteries were the achilles' heel of them all.
-
Just in case.....
I hope it's the right one. Good addition.
I could not downsize your photo with my editor for some reason so just searched the date.

I’ll try to find out if there are any other markings on it.
Thanks. I wasn't trying to prod you, but I like puzzeling things. This ones good, and I suppose Irondragon has it right, but you never know.

Thank you, Mike. Frosty are you worried about a Fire Bug.....
-
You are welcome of course. Just another source of knowledge.

Keep two jugs in the fridge. His-n-Hers.

I can't tell you what I think of bindweed.

There's not much that's not edible slathered in Duke's mayo or fried in bacon grease.

No, nothing like that. I used it for many years in a shop/industry that made large stuff. I just liked welding with it and asked out of curiosity. Yes, the smoke would choke a buzzard.....
As you said, many years ago.

I unfortunately hit someone in the forehead with a bottle rocket once. We quit after that.
-
I could be worse. There's kudzu here. I thought bindweed was bad.

I have always called them melters. Don't forget, a drain hole to protect the bottom of your "unit" for those inevitable spills....

I have been looking at this for some time. Are there no other markings? Where did you get it? Location could be a clue you know. I see some crust in the "closing plate". The arm that clamps it looks like it has a boss for a lever of some kind but I am not sure. I wonder what the purpose of the key looking hole in the casting is for. These things drive me nuts.

If you have the interest and time, consider ordering a copy of Gingery's "Universal Coil Winding Machine".

Have you ever had the pleasure of welding flux core with shielding gas?

Ever been hit with a green apple?
They leave a pretty good welt. Worse than dirt clods.

Nimrod, and to answer Goods question, that catalog is copywrited 1876 (not sure of mfg dates of vises though) and can found on the Internet Archive. Very nice story.

It looks kind of like this one. Maybe they made other models.

Well, I completely misunderstood what you wrote, I don't know why, but I did. And I should know better. I would never expect you to turn off caring about people, anymore than I could not care for others. Especially friends. I sincerely appologize for my confusion. I sent you a PM concerning this. You have many thanks for the hug and scritch coming your way......
As far as the bumping thing goes, I bumped a topic TWICE but did not add any content to it. Actually this happened once before, I was warned and it is entirely my fault. Can't have everybody bumping everything all over the place, it would get pretty confusing.
My, this thread went haywire.....

Not the "sole" purpose sometimes. But thanks for reading my mind.

Sigh...... Ok, I would be curious and probably try it. You called me out. I was trying to be dramatic. I will never learn. But I did watch Das Boot.
