Thanks George! This syle of vise does need the use of a spring to lift the lever. The pivot point is very far forward. I found some pictures on the site of a few of these exact vises. Now to find a period correct spring or make one
Looks like they came with a bunch of inserts. I can see where i will be using this alot once i have a few jaws made for her.
Also feel silly for just now figuring out the adjustable block is actually a adjustable upsetting block. Boy i feel smart. Lol

I like it fairly dark wile forging. Unfortunately ive been doing more tool restoration than hammering on hot iron as of late. Still have quite a few hammers to handle before I can get back to work.

Ok thanks a bunch! I had wondered if that was the case. Ill polish the pivot and lever.

Love that vise! Shes a beauty!!! Great job on the restore as well!!

Here is a Well bro's vise made in Greenfield mass. Does anyone know how the spring set up us supposed to work. It has none but it definitely needs at least two to function. Its a joy to have in the shop.
I have a bungee cord on it now to make it function. Also what is the cogged apparatus for?
My machinist is making me a new set of brass jaws for her as we speak.

A veritable work of art. I would say, "Not for sale."
Agreed Frank !! Think I will pass that on on to my kids. Onto project number two! It is in much better shape though. Just a take down and wire brushing will make her shine.

This one was in the pile i brought home from conneticit. Looked like she spent many years buried in some yard lol. But when i opened her up the screw and box looked like they were new. Couldn't help but spend a few days bringing her back to her former glory. ENJOY!
Had already cleaned her up a bit before i had taken any pics. Sorry

Only advice I have is, talk to your leaf spring soothingly wile heating it. You must have made it mad at some point.
Jokes aside, start on much smaller work. Some 3/8 round stock and make a s hook or something. That spring steel moves hard. .....also if that is the piece you were thinking of making a hot cut out of, it is a very poor choice.

Definitely feeling some forge and tool envy!! Very nice setup and your defiantly comfortable, rocking the jammies at the forge! Lol.
Happy forging!
