Im building a large assembly table for building a large gate for my driveway/railing. Think large ornamental! (Chain fall kind of projects)
Space allows a 5x10 and I am having a series of hardie holes or stake holes cut in the top forge side.
My questions are.... If you were building a table of this sort what thickness would you use? I can't afford much more than 3/4 and a 3/4x5x10 is already around 1150 lbs without a base.
What advantages are there for a thick plate? 1/4 vrs 1"+?
What features would you have cut into the plate? (Yes i would love a huge acorn but i cant find one lol).
Im leaning towards 3/4" but do not want to throw money away if thinner will work or not make it thick enough! I hope to use it for the next 40ish years. Opinions please!
Thanks in advance
Brian

And when you do finally one, anvils will seem to be attracted to you. Before you know it you will have more than you can use lol.
I believe the main reason for this is because as you start using your first you unknowingly use TPAAAT. You start showing ppl your work, you are so excited you tell EVERYONE. Pretty soon word gets around and those unused "hidden" anvils start getting dropped off by friends and family.

Yeah, that's a cr . . . ummy picture alright. How many times do we have to tell you. OBLIQUE LIGHTING! And what's with a shiny steel background?
Nice looking leaves and bottle holder, I like your bottle racks. Do yourself a favor, keep a piece of clean plywood safe to use as a background for photos. Tan is a nice neutral color to shoot black or silver against and the grain pattern is enough texture to take the mind off the wood. It's not so good if you brush on much brass highlighting, go for green.
Okay, I've had enough fun beating up on you Millhand. I really do like your wine racks and grape vines.

Hahaa, I knew that post was coming. Sorry frosty I literally went out bearfoot and snapped that abortion. Ill do better from now on.
Thanks frosty, means alot that you dig my work. Tomorrow I'll take a proper picture.

I broke out the black tape about a hour to late. Didn't help that the only good cross peen (the only one that would texture the way i wanted) is 4lbs.
I thought id be able to finish that rack today. Def glad im not smithing to make money. Id be pretty skinny.

Made some parts to a wine rack ive been storing in my head for some time. Ended up stopping at 11 grape leaves as i had worn a decent spot thin on my hamer hand. Havent had a blister in many years. Getting soft i guess!
Crappie pic but i made one of the 4 bottle holders and the main vine as well. Hope to make the branches and some grapes tomorrow. What do you guys think?

started 4 punches that need final refinement. they will be for eyes and such on forged animal/reptile heads. pics tomorrow when done. Meant to do more but ya know....... family business....
I use a practice tip for bowhunting to do the depression in a eye punch. Grind to the shape you want and the sholder holds it up in the vice well.

Just finished heat treating a knife. Heat treat went well, I used a tube in my coal forge to heat it first time I've done it that way. The blade skates a file and is now tempering in the oven. Oh and Zero warp. I'm very happy the way this knife is turning out. Hopefully it will get finished today.
pics or it didn't happen lol

If that's your personal set put your initials on the handles! (and charge extra when people want their initials on the ones they buy!)
Great idea! Thank you Thomas

Maybe if you anneled both and sliced them up into thin pieces With a bandsaw. Way to much work for me though. Id wait until i had proper stock.

Hello Josh! I cant help with your question much as I have no experience with making canister Damascus.
Although I have spent a good deal of time researching the methods. If you havent already done so, watch the skull Damascus video by big dog forge. He makes it look easy! Its a project I want to do someday, (After ive finished my press and own a power hammer).
There are tons of projects you can do with that round stock. To name just a few tongs, s hooks, coat hangers, camping sets. Keep that anvil ringing!
Heres to a better start at IF! Cheers! Lol

How much does that weigh? What stock size did you start with?
The first one with the flattened scrolls was a full 12" of 3/16 round. They do not weigh much, ill see if i have a small scale to weigh them.
Unfortunately I did not measure the stock for the flower it was made from 1/2 square, i just drew out 14" of 3/16ish round out of it. Probably about 5" of 1/2 square.
Both my wife and daughter have extremely thick hair so i wasn't to concerted with weight. They are quite light though.

Thank you!! I had a great time making it. Post some pics when you get it done. Think i may try the same excuse, worked last time lol!!
Better pic of it, my wife actually brushes her hair lol!!

Thanks! Im trying to get the little ones involved and on my side so mama will stop complaining about my time spent forging lol. Keep telling her there are far worse things i could be doing than learning a new craft.

I do not know what a steel scuba tank would weigh, but the scrap yard I buy from charges me .35 cents a pound. (For steel)
So if you can, follow him to the scrap yard..... lol

Price seems high to me, if your on a budget id probably pass for now.
You Can most likely buy some down the road if you can come up with a idea for them that will save you time or make you money! Best of luck jmo
Btw the dishing form is a awesome idea!! Thank you!!!

HOLY MACKEREL! Who did you have to kill to get that haul and where'd you hide the bodies? More pics please especially once you've spread the loot out.
I get giddy excited when I see a pair of tongs or nice hammer at a sale but an entire shop? Who's your fairy godmother?
Congrats, I'm just suffering a bit of EVERYDARNEDTHING.
Frosty The Lucky.
THE ONLY DEAD BODY WAS ALMOST ME! When I told my wife i had bought "some" gear and was going to have to go on a "little" 3 day road trip to get it she was "slightly" upset!
Here is some of the best of the hual.

4x4 chunk of steel, no idea what ill do with it but couldn't pass up Free!!
This fan came with it for the same price. Works great. Its a blessing as its 90 with air so thick you can almost cut it with a knife. Yuck....
Strange, i took the grinder to it and the sparks said cast, took a hammer to a corner n sure enough. Bummer....
