If you've got lots of room having a different station for each process has something to recommend it but if you spread out your work area, particularly where you work with hot metal you start to loose heat between stations

    I got the room George!

loosing heat isn’t really an issue either cause I’ve got a lot of different forges to work with I can just set up another forging station next to the tool post

But I also recall there being a treadle hammer somewhere to the right of the anvil - so it might impede the path to that

Your spot on Shaina that’s the setup in the west corner!

An your right the treadle hammer is over in that direction so a tool post will have to be setup elsewhere and have a separate forge to use with it,

that all being said with the exception of the treadle hammer nothing is bolted down and I have tractors!!!! Lol

so I can reconfigure the smithy an play around with placement on stuff if I don’t like where something is! :P

  2. Awsome!

I’m glad to hear some cards are starting to make it to their destinations!

yes these cards were specifically picked out and approved by Max! Lol

ive contemplated disguising a one ton sack as a over sized stocking!!!:P

Hey, I'm new to this so can someone please help

Howdy from eastern Oklahoma and welcome to the forum!!!

Used anvil prices vary greatly on location, some places you’d be lucky to get $2 a pound, and other places it’s a bargin at $5 a pound,

and the second thing is condition, if it’s crisp sharp never been used it’s worth more, if it’s missing half the face it’s worth scrap price,

Blacksmiths are looking for a tool to use and won’t pay more for used then they can buy it new but antique collectors will pay a stupid amount if it’s something they want,

so it’s kinda hard to help you out with your question without knowing where your located and see a few pictures of the anvil in question

As for the stand, since you have a hardy hole, why not use it at the anvil

I don’t have any problem with using it at the anvil but I’ve wanted to make a tooling stand for awhile for more than just the guillotine,

I also want to build a stand alone stand so I can swap out various bending and scrolling jigs and other tooling an use really long stock an not worry about anything shifting since it’d be anchored into the concrete pad

also what else am I gonna do with that perfect little square holed plate?!?! (Jerry don’t answer)

And last but not least because I think a stand alone stand would look cool! B) Lol

    BillyBones,

thank you for your insight on yours

I think I will probably go with the bolt together one that has the flat top dies,

ive looked at the c framed ones both home made and factory made and I may make or buy one in the future but for now I think imma try out the one from BS Depot

do you have pictures of your C and H frames that you built?

  6. Imma wake up an old thread here,

Back around Halloween BillyBones made some sweet looking pumpkins outta pipe and I asked him what he used an he said a guillotine which started me looking at some commercially available ones

there’s some really really cheesy ones on Amazon with bad reviews and then there’s some crazy expensive ones that are built at an angle like the one above and then I found two comparable ones.

price is roughly the same only difference I can see is the BS depot one is bolted together and comes with a cutting die, and the one from BS supply is riveted together an comes with no dies,

both companies offer several ready made dies to choose from as well as blanks to make your own,

I was wondering if anyone on here has tried one or both of them out and what your opinion is on them?

also I found some stuff at the scrap yard that I think would make a perfect tooling stand for a guillotine, some 12”x12” 3/8” plate and a 1/4” walled rectangle pipe that’s 3”x6” and a piece of 3/8” plate that just so conveniently happened to have a 1” square hole already in it!!!! Lol

i was wondering if anyone else has a stand for your guillotines and what you like or dislike about them?

here’s a mock up of what I’m thinking an it would be anchored into concrete and filled with sand

BTW, how old is Max. 2, IIRC

He is currently two but he turns three in March,

yeah I don’t like being cooped up in a car all day that’s why I would prefer to fly if I have the option

    Jerry

might be a stupid question but do any of the bigger railroads connect Alaska to the US across Canada? Or do y’all have to ship everything over water

  8. Just hitch the moose team to the RV an y’all will be here in no time Jerry!

there’s a historic passenger train that runs from Missouri down to Van buren Arkansas that puts on a polar express Pajama night ride we were gonna take him on but they are all booked up so we will try next year,

they run that train on a regular schedule so we may take him for a ride on that sooner

looks like it wasn't crowded which is great as well!

There was a super long line to get onboard and to Santa but the trip through the actual train wasn’t crowded, we were able to spend a few minutes at each display!

I didn't even know that existed actually, I

Kansas City southern does one every year! they start down in Louisiana by Les’s smithy and they end up by Shainas blacksmith shop! an I’m somewhere in the middle! :P lol

I'd suggest that you bring Max to Golden in the next year or 2 but it is a 12 hour drive from Peavine to Golden. Sigh

I don’t think me or Max could handle a 12 hr drive and the current fuel prices are prohibitive, but I just looked at cheap flights from north west Arkansas to Denver an saw some as cheap as $34 bucks for a 2 hr flight so we might just fly out there an get a rental car! Lol

    Les

Yes He had a ball! He whooped an hollard the whole time lol

that train starts down in Louisiana in November so maybe next year you could get a chance to see it if you have time and it’s not to for away!

Here’s the schedule for this year

    https://www.kcsouthern.com/pdf/community/2022-Holiday-Express-Schedule.pdf

  11. Well worked all day in the shop an never saw the kitten do I figured he ran off,

just heard a mew come from the parts room and took a peek and saw him on a self

so I brought him a water bowl, a bowl of cat food, an a can of tuna, an shut the door so the dogs, cats, possums and everything else can’t get in there an take his dinner and bug him

  12. Took Max to the Kansas City Southern Christmas train this evening, it stopped here in stilwell, had to wait in line about an hour to get onboard but it was pretty cool!

when I set him on the steps to take a picture before we got onboard he bolted past me and the elves and shot straight up them steps and the elf up top tried to help him an he got away from him too running into the train!

they had em all decorated in the two cabooses and the box car had two huge dioramas with running trains,

And at the end we saw Santa!

The Christmas train was towed here by an old passenger train and it was pretty cool looking too!

over all it was a good time an Max had a blast!
