  3. Mark,

I'm about halfway between you and Nick.  I went to Threshmens park for an Upper Midwest Blacksmith Association event a few weeks ago.  Haven't been to a hammer in there, but had a good time the day I could spend on it.  It's about 50 miles from you - exit 201 on I55.  If you decide to burn coal you can get smithing coal in Streator (also about 50 - 60 miles from you) at Missal Farmers Grain Co.

Let me know if you make it anywhere near the Peoria area.

cool I was up at UMBA to also you might know Bud Harvey I'm pretty Shure he lives in Peoria

  4. what's up guys my name is mark . haven't started smiting yet but I'm putting one foot in front of the other so hopefully I can get started soon. just got done building my first charcoal forge (hope it works lol) um not good at introducing my self so yeah lol. oh and I'm from Joliet IL so if any one around there who would like to help some one new give me a shout out.

  5. you could talk to some local farmers if they own a really old farm chances are they have an anvil or search flea markets and antique shops or even auctions are a great place to find old blacksmiths tools h/I beam works great as long as you don't live next to people or if your extremely desperate you could buy a harbor freight anvil and every couple of times you use it you'll have to grind it down to get a flat face and with rr track check out auctions I bought 2 large pieces and an ore cart track and some smaller track at an auction for $4 and welcome to the sight

  6. ive been looking around to see if anybody's had the same problems im having but could not so if I can find some help with this it would be appreciated. The vice that concerns me the most is the one on the left its a 35lb vice and it has a very strong spring in it and im worried it will strip the threads so I found another spring and I will have to work on it to get it to fit but before I do I want to know if the threads will strip. Next vice is the one in the middle when the vice is open at 6 inches the washers begin to open look at pic to see what I mean and at 7inches the washers get worse also it gets harder to open and feels like the threads are striping and when its tightened it has a 3/16 inch gap. Then the last one on the right its threads are very worn and will only close to 1 1/2 inches and has no washers don't think this one can be fixed with out destroying it this one has sentimental value also its 35lb. sorry for all the info

  7. welcome Nick O.  FYI  When you were in the chat room yesterday, we teased you a little bit because we have another member named Nick  that used to hang out here and we thought you were him, his other half is called Marcy is still in but he isnt as much, we assumed she has him chained up somewhere so she could take over his shop

I figured you were talking about someone else and don't worry no offence taken and thanks for welcoming me

  8. Where are you? There are probably more smiths closer than you realize and face to face can teach you way more in one afternoon than a month or more of YouTube and trial and error.

I am a member of a group called Illinois Valley Blacksmith Association other wise know as IVBA and may soon be a member of UMBA Upper Midwest Blacksmith Association and yes there are some smiths by me the nearest one is 45min away and several others
