Has anyone from NJ Gov started talking to you about isostasy?  Your collection should be depressing the local bedrock by now!   I've seen scale build up and rust solid around smithing equipment; I hope it comes apart clean; it's a lovely piece(s).

There's a spot on my driveway that rusted becuase that's where I always wire wheel.

  2. The last episode was one of my favorites. Though, all I was thinking was that those guys were destroying their lungs. All that coal smoke going everywhere and no ventilation.

Also, I have watched this show and read a thread about why they don't temper their knives. I know for a fact that they don't temper their knives becuase of episode 1 of season 2. They judges used a file to test and see if the guys blade was hard. Now if he tempered the blade, then that test wouldn't work. I guess they could do it in the handle stage, but why wouldn't they show just a glimpse of it then? This has really been making me wonder.

your facts are wrong, they temper the blades overnight, off camera.   You seem to have developed a habit of posting nonsense without knowledge of the subject.

Lol take it easy. It seems that the only time you comment is to try and bash me and tell me what I do wrong. If you would read the end of my sentence, I said maybe they do it in the handle stage. so to me it looks like you are the one posting non sense without knowledge of the subject.

If you didnt post so many false hoods we would not have too correct you so often,

  3. Yeah that's I guess a pipe nipple will work then. I was thinking the threads would interefere, but as long as they are on the outside I should be good. Also, my burner mount kind of needs to be 1-1/2". The flare flares out to about1-3/8" and it is recommended that a 1-1/2" pipe is used as a mount. That comment about using vinegar to remove any galvanization to a galvanized pipe brings me to another thing. I see hinges are either zinc plated or brass. I know both are bad when heated. My hinges I have are zinc plated. I am guessing that it would be a good idea to put them in vinegar for a little while. Thanks for the help everyone, more progress pictures will hopefully be up next week.

  4. Well I checked the plumbing supply and asked if he has schedule 80 tubing. The guy had no idea what schedule 80 was. He said he doesn't carry it, and has no idea where to get it. Then the young guy behind the counter told him that scd 80 is a thickness of the tubing. That guy told me that I could check the electrical supply, but they will only have pvc there. I also went to another place, and they had no idea what it was. I was shocked. Maybe the places around here need to hire employees that know the field the are working for. That's why guilds should still be around. You can actually trust the guy doing work for you or that you are getting help from. Anyways, so is regular hardware store tubing too thin?

yes I did make those tools! do you still need some help with the eye punch? sorry for my late reply!

No problem. So basically what type of steel did you use? Also, the construction of the eye and nose punch. I know that you must taper them down first, but to what size at the tip of the taper? Also, what size ball punch do you use to make the eye divot? Lastly, do you round two edges of the eye punch to get an oval shape? Brian brazeals punch looked like it left a semi circle semi oval shape. Thank you very much, and any other tips you have on making them will be greatly appreciated.

yes that is what I was talking about. when I when to England, I asked alec steele if we could make a big horse head. I will get a pic of it.

I saw that horse had in your YouTube video. Is it much different from the flat horses?

Think I may have found my anvil. This is not my picture but we have the same machine and have one of the bars that holds the blades laying in the dirt in our junk pile. I think it's about 2" thick, any reason it wouldn't work?

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but as long as it is it is a decent amount of thickness, you should be ok. Whether that is an anvil, piece of steel, or even a hard rock.

  7. I am now getting a piece of pipe for a burner mount so that I can get everything welded. I looked into scd 80 since it would probobly be better to have for a forge than regular pipe. However the places I have gone say they never heard of schedule 80 pipe before. So I looked online and a little 4" piece is only going to cost me about 5 bucks. However, shipping is like $13. My question is that will regular sized pipe you would get at a hardware store work, or is it too thin? Thanks

  8. Yeah I did the same thing as you. Bought my supplies from Wayne and am using his instructions. I contacted Zoeller 3 times over the past few weeks, and got nothing. I contacted High temp last night, and he responded right away. I am going to order tonight, and maybe work in my t burner. The tricky part is going to be the casting. I want to make sure that it is level so that I don't have the cracks like you said you got. I think my dads spackel knife will do the trick.

Also, how long did your shipment from high temp take?

  9. You know what, I really need an anvil with better edges. Right now I can't afford a nice anvil in good shape, so I am going to try and go to the scrap yard and get a big chunk of steel. Of course the things I want to forge need decent edges: horse heads, cranes, and tools. Yeah I could make a hardy tool, but my hardy is messed up too. If I do wind up making it after I am done with my current project, I will make a thread for you guys.
