When your coal fire starts to smoke punch a hole in the top and allow the smoke to catch fire. Less smoke equals less smell. As for me coal smoke smells fantastic!

Harry sir My first forge area was an 8' x 8' shed almost killed myself with carbon monoxide. Never again. The next was  8'x8' 3 sided shed' The next was a 3 sided 40' x20' loafing shed with push out openings on the north (downwind side). Currently I am using a 12' x 16' awning never again will subject myself to carbon monoxide poisoning It is the worst headache one will ever experience. What about using a rifle brush to clean out the rust with vinegar or something similar as the (soap) to clean it out. Don't give up too easily on the solution!

The problem is not with the media but with the air supply. There are water separators for supply lines.   However with enough air supply pressure this problem can be overcome. But you still will not be happy. Been there suffered the results.

My Uncle in northern nebraska lost his hearing this way. He sued. How the suite ended I never heard. Non-the less he lost his hearing. I would never do this to an anvil.

Sorry if I came across as harsh (I reread my post).  Yes the directions are accurate get the bearing in the pipe then ream. Wish you well on the spencer.

I am not a hammer guy, however the important measurement at this point is the O D of the oilite bearing and the ID of the pipe. I don't have any books handy for schedule 80 pipe.

Let me brag a little here about chisel marks on anvil legs! The marks on mine are deeper than yours!! However they are not on the important top plate. use it in good health for years. Like a skin doctor told me years ago "in your case it is not a beauty mark, but a scar and a badge.

My brother and I used to weld together. We would discuss a plan of attack and then do the job. These were mostly weird jobs. He was a better welder than me so I would do the fitting, or rolling pipe. We rarely spoke. Now with smithing I preferred working alone. As Kozzy above it is the zone!

The other alternative to your blower is to keep looking for a hand crank blower   They are infinity adjustable.  Nice looking forge keep up the good work!
