I grew up in the desert and was an Infantry soldier, so honestly 1 mile is close, 5 is a stroll and 10 is a long walk.

Bet you miss those days on occasion don't you? When I was younger I had a job that was 15 miles from my house (about as close as you could find employment since the few closer places never had anyone quit). I had a vehicle when I first started there but had a wreck and totaled it one day leaving me on foot. I started riding a bicycle to work five or six days a week. I rode the 15 miles to work then I worked for 8 hours then rode back home. The last two miles were mostly up hill which was rough at first. I hear complaints about not being able to go and after I tell that little story people usually quit complaining.

They put that in the scrap bin and then worry about invoicing an employee for "scrap" worth less than $10?  Weird.  Penny wise pound foolish?

I have the same issue where I work. I get some scrap pieces on occasion but instead of putting my cash in the cash box they actually invoice it.

  3. You might want to run a few boards perpendicualr to the others with some good screws holding each of your 2x3 boards to it. It would be a shame if the humidity changed enough for the boards to swell and pop the glue joints. If the steel on top is thick enough it's weight will help hold the boards down but if you go too thing you might find it causing some trouble for you later. I've seen wood do some pretty impressive moves when it collected enough moisture from its surroundings so I wanted to give some warning/food for thought.

  4. I have a problem with my head getting lodged from time to time and need some help getting it broke free. I see others here trying to do that with people all the time. Trying hard to help people but when you read the discussion the wisdom is sitting there not being taken advantage of and it makes my head hurt.

  5. I had someone tell me one time, "there's always time to do it right later." He then proceeded to do it half way because he was in a hurry. After his half measure failed he had to undo the damage and rebuild spending much more time than necessary if he'd simply done it right in the first place.

Are you going to have something other than glue holding the work surface boards together?

  6. I've never heard of that toy company but did a quick search. The set looks like it could be fun for kids with good imagination (read "kids not too tainted by technology to have good old fashioned fun"). I might see about getting one for my 4 year old.

Thanks for bringing this to light, Thomas.

I'm hoping to see some tongs made from rebar coming up.

Truth is I'm hoping to see tongs made from something other than rebar. Rebar and it's inconsistencies has been discussed more than enough time on IFI that any time spent reading other topics would show it's inadequacies for forge work.

  8. I was working on a wood heater for my shop today modled off of the one in my house. I decided to use folded and lapsed edges like the professionally built one has but I do not have a brake in my shop.

In my resource pile I have some large angle I rescued from scrap years ago that looked like it would work so I have it a shot. I took a couple pictures to show the setup even though I could describe it fairly easily enough.

Once you have your angle setup simply insert to your line and clamp it firmly. Then you can bend up or down. I had to use a hammer to persuade the last little bit to cooperate and straighten out. The sheet I used for this project was salvaged from the exoskeleton of an old junked car.

With just a little modification one could easily build a break based off of this basic idea. Who knows I might just make one myself one day just in case I need it again.

  9. Started working on a wood heater for my shop roughly modeled off the one in my house. When I got started I had a couple options for the joints. I could either join all the corners using angle iron or I could fold the edges over and lock them together (like the ones on my professionally made one). I opted for the later but then I had to figure out how to make the bends in the sheet since I have no brake in my shop. So I improvised and used some large angle. When I get further along I'll post some pictures of it.

  10. You might find a local jewelry making class at a college that has what you are looking for. Another option could be to take a pawn shop woman's solitaire ring and cut off the part with the diamond and mount. After that you can pull the ring through some drawing dies, you'll end up with plenty of wire from one ring. You might want to read up on the process of drawing the wire.

  11. He had a follow up today with his regular Dr. I don't know what to think about this guy anyway but after today I think it's time to find a new one. He looks at the same X-rays they took at the hospital and tell my wife that it's just bronchitis. It seems that is the go to diagnosis with this dr.

My son seems to be feeling some better still having some fever at night but nothing too bad. During the day he seems fine but we try to keep him calm so he doesn't get too hot and tired. I think the worst has passed and he's well on his way to recovery.

    Thank you again everyone.

  12. Thank for the vote of confidence there Charles. I've definitely figured out parenting isn't something you can learn from others. I've had friends with children for years before my wife and I met and thought I learned a thing or two about being a parent. Boy was I wrong. As mine gets older I see more that each child is vastly different than any other and they all respond differently to the same treatment.

I'm not a parent though so my advice is based on a lack of experience.

Not to sound crass but you have more life experience than I do. Your advice is still good advice even without experience as a parent.

He's on our list Michael as are you and Mom. Keep YOUR overnight bag packed Brother and skip the doc in a box next time. I'm not dissing "Urgent cares" but there are some things you just don't want to take a chance on.

Be well Brother we're pulling for you.

    Frosty

We had no idea it would be that bad. Next time something like that comes up we probably will do just as you suggest and skip straight to the ER. We just knew when with a fever of 102F we needed immediate attention. His fever got worse before he got to Children's (104 iirc) and doesn't even remember the ambulance ride which took longer than I could've made the drive (and I've been told I drive like an 'old man' by a couple people).

He had a rough night last night with another spiking fever but seems to be feeling better today. Hopefully the fevers are gone. I remember the one time I had pneumonia, I was 20 at the time and I was very miserable so I can only imagine how he feels.

Thank you all again for the well wishes and prayers. We will get through this, it will take longer than any of us want but in the end it will be ok and he will get better.

  15. They decided to release him. Leaving the hospital now.

Thank you everyone for the prayers and well wishes. Even though he's still sick I find myself feeling better. At least we know what's wrong.
