  1. Bigred1o1 not gonna lie, I'm pretty jealous of that bottle jack. Many times would it have been nice to have one like that.
  2. That's what I would try first is that 'resistance' bolt. It's the easiest thing to check and work on with out tearing it down to the gear end. Grant it tearing it down to the gear end is real straight forward, I'd still check that bolt first.
  3. I'm pretty jealous of that blower stand actually, I have a champion blower like yours (except you scored the stand that goes with it.) Mine was extremely hard to turn, however I found that the shaft the fan blades are on, follow the shaft to the gear end and there's a nut and bolt. The way I understand it is you can set how much resistance is applied to the shaft. The more resistance the harder she is to turn.
  4. It's cast of some sort you can see a seam on the horn.
  5. Now that you've got that vise I'll take that post vise in the background off your hands. :)
  6. I've tried to search and maybe I just got lazy and couldn't find it. I've got a buddy that wants me to try to make a tomahawk for him and I was curious on what steel to use for the cutting edge? I know there's a bunch of different high carbon steels, my question is what kind of hc steel do you use and what are it's pros and cons?
  7. I've noticed cold rolled is more brittle then hot rolled. Also cold rolled has a much higher tensile strength then hot rolled. So whenever I make something with bends or I'm working the metal real thin I use hot from all of my trial and errors.

  9. http://www.iforgeiron.com/gallery/image/38009-anvil-5/ My Great Grandfathers Peter Wright 201 lbs anvil. Also found out my Grandma is giving me her dads anvil from their homestead. Score!!!!!
  10. This was the first book I ever read for blacksmithing. A old farrier and very dear friend of mine, got it new when it first came out. He and I were talking and I told him I'd be nice if I could get ahold of a book about blacksmithing. He gave me his original copy of this book. It's a wonderful book and touches in depth in very aspect of that you can smithing for.
  11. I had one burst last night and it was a little guy. I think I was just using to much water to often, I'll certainly try putting a hole in the fire to let the gas escape, and letting the blower to push enough air worked great last night. The flip lid and moving the piping for the air flow will be done when I build a new forge, and until then I'm gonna run this forge till she can't run no more.
  12. Thanks big time you guys! Mine weren't shotgun loud but they were getting there. I'll take your suggestions and use them tonight. Thanks again!
  13. How do I prevent this? Or do I get over it and just work with it?
  14. So the past two nights I've been smithing and it's been great. Expect for one thing, randomly, usually when my blower is off, there's a large burst sometimes small poof out of nowhere. It's never the same expect that it does it while my blower is off, I'm slightly concerned on why it's doing this, and how do I stop it from doing it. It'll scatter my coal across my fire pot or nothing will happen. If anybody knows what causes this and how to stop it that'd be very helpful.
  15. Wroughton, I wish we still had some of are old rigs, when my great grandfather drilled everything was steam powered and had to be pulled by oxen to the location. What a piece of machinery that would have been. Are scrap pile isn't that impressive we scrap quite a bit of stuff, and the vast amount of tools we have is what I drool over. We still have my great grandfathers two man crosscut saw. Comical cutter heads? Do you mean drill bits? Cause we've got a lot of those I think the biggest one we have is 23 inches. Yeah I've got it bad with the snowies and the lil snowies, belts, lil belts, Judiths, and moccasins. It's just terrible. I don't know what mountain ranges are around you, the Rockies obviously. And I'm glad to hear you wouldn't have a problem putting me to work. I'm a big guy and I haven't helped one person yet that has a hard time putting me to work.
  16. Wroughton, Most be terrible for Deron having to look at the crazys every morning. :) Thank you also for sharing the story about your great grandfather and great uncle, that's a very neat story. My great grandfather started Singley Drilling in 1911 where he drilled water wells and also ran his farm at the same time. I have the privilege of using his anvil and a few of his tongs that have survived. I don't know how much time you spend in your smithy and if I'm ever up I your neck of the woods and you need an extra hand I'd be more than willing, happy and take it as a privledged to be that extra hand. Lastly, I have a few of my friends help me here and there when I need an extra hand. They all seem to enjoy helping and what I'm doing I know one of my friends wishes he wasn't traveling all the time cause he said he'd have a forge built by now and be blacksmithing.
  17. BobL you can keep your 100F please don't share it with me haha
  18. Yup don't want to use alcohol to much of a hassle tinkering when I need to just figure out and produce a solid running waste oil forge was just asking the question for my friend who was curious about it that's all Thomas i didn't think about the alcohol evaporating that'd become a big problem like gasoline and I'm probably going to look into that V2 burner system just to see how it works and if there's any ideas from it that could work with waste oil into future forges.
  19. I'm sure your'e thinking younger person+moonshine=drinking and thats not it. I don't drink nor want too. I was just using moonshine as example cause of how high the alcohol content it has. I was just curious if it'd work at all? I know alcohol is flammable but does it combust enough to generate enough btu's that'd you could get metal hot enough. I don't have the money to buy propane and I've got plenty of waste oil laying around. Parts are not the easiest to come by around here the closest city's are a 2 hour drive and the scrap yard here doesn't allow customers to walk around cause the hutteriates here would steal scrap metal all the time. I do how ever have plenty of plumbing parts though.
  20. Alright I'm planning on making a waste oil forge, I'm tired of trying to get a hold a coal, that's the main thing that's setting me back is getting a source of fuel and coal ain't doing it for me cause I can't get a constant supply and let's be honest it's expense to buy online. I know some of you are thinking just run gas and I just don't feel like running gas, I don't know if it's because I don't have the money to build a gas forge or what, so waste oil it is for me. I was reviewing my plan with a friend and explaining how a waste oil forge worked, I mentioned that if done right someone can run diesel, kerosine, propane as well and not just waste oil. That's what brings up the alcohol part he asked if you could run a high proof alcohol like oh just for fun we'll say moonshine. I don't see why it wouldn't work and wanted to see what everybody's thoughts and feelings were about this idea and if just if anybody had ever done it and wanted to share their expereince with us. I also have a feeling it wouldn't be very cost effective to run your forge off of alcohol yet it'd still be interesting to at least find out.
  21. I gotcha now Wroughton, I can see bozo having a still somewhat high concentration or still feel like it. I don't know why thats just bozeman for you. I've heard of the Sore Elbow Forge in bozo, and havn't heard of Ben Lund over by Fort Benton same with Deron Johnson at Big Timber. I know theres the Bar Mill Iron Forge in Big Timber and I've looked at their portfolio of the items and projects that group has done and its awesome! Heres a link to their website if anybody wants to look at their portfolio http://barmillironforge.com/?pageID=361338 The NRBA needs to get more younger people to get interested. I've started to find out with my generation when you tell my generation that you do blacksmithing they think it sounds just like a giant snorefest. I feel like if younger people, my generation, had more of an oppurtunity to at least try out blacksmithing they'd realize it's more then just hitting red hot iron in between an anvil and a hammer, and find a real enjoyment out of this art.
  22. Vaughn its two steps maybe three and just for you I'll say theres a chance its 4 steps :) I can't get a good coal supply so I'm gonna be making a waste oil forge soon. Wroughton, I'm happy to see another fellow montanan on here. I'll leave the power hammer to you, one less peice of equipement I've got to worry about haha. Theres a Blacksmith out by Giltedge in between Grass Range and Lewistown, I've heard he's starting to get out of the trade due to health complications and his body not being able to do it anymore. then theres kind of a bladesmith in lewistown. then theres a bladesmith out by roy and thats just a rumor too. and what do you mean by bozeman/big timber area being lousy? I dont know if theres any NRBA in or around lewistown are you apart of the NRBA? Yves, I agree with catching up on IFI thats what I've been doing with all this BEAUTIFUL! weather I've had in my neck of the woods, shes warming up and that just means I go back to my job wait till it snows and then back to blacksmithing, its a terrible cycle :)
  23. what are the parts you are missing? and I wish I could help you out man. my best guess see if theres anybody on here that has spare parts on the feedback/ support thread. If you do decide to make your own replacement parts please share on here what you did to make them I'd be very interested to know and I'm sure there's others on here.
  24. frosty I agree on the tunes part for sure haha I defiantly agree on the power outlets, ventilation, doors, etc. the shop i work in was built by my grandfather probably in the 60's and its stuffed with 4 generations worth of history and tools me being the 4th. and with the little can forge its not gonna be my main one at all what so ever! but I need something that is big enough that i can do smaller projects like key fobs yet small enough where its just small. and I'm to cheap to just buy a brand new forge.
  25. I'm actually thinking about making a little soup can forge or I may replace the soup can for something a little more bigger like a coffee grounds can.
