  1. Would chromed steel be suitable as an input to making demascus? I've got a LOT of old motorcycle pipes that I was thinking could find a home near my forge if so....
  2. Found a decent anvil for a good price (and a long drive), cleaned the rust off of it, and am considering trying to flatten the top a bit, as it has about 1/8-1/4" dip in the middle...I've read several threads saying to use as is, some sway is actually useful, etc...am I worried about nothing? My other thought is that if I absolutely need a fla surface, I can make a hardened plate attached to a hardy...appreciate any thoughts.
  3. Absolutely thom, still trying to find a better way to deal with the wiggle factor...
  4. Thank you, all...had forgotten about the notion of the tank freezing up....it starts after about 45 minutes of forging, so this could very well be the issue. tim, you're comments were similar to my thoughts, that the back pressure from the hotter internal air would require more pressure, but it's topping out at 15 psi, and becoming more gas pressure than the Venturi effect can pull through the side burner. I will try a couple of different burner sizes and see what happens.
  5. I'm finding that my burner requires me to turn up the pressure more and more as the forge gets hotter....is this normal? If I don't, the flame jumps back to inside the burner body (it's a basic pipe fitting burner with a mig tip jet)... Any input or comments would be appreciated.
  6. Thanks for the responses...my main concern was safety, but as Frosty said, if it ain't broke....
  7. I've fabricated a couple of burners out of pipe fittings, Reil style, .035 mig tips, 6" x 3/4 main pipe with a 1" nipple as a flare into a tank-style forge. First run, wasn't getting enough air. Drilled some intake holes in the main pipe, pretty much even with where the MIG tip ends... here's my question/concern: runs like a champ at around 5 lbs pressure, but any lower, and the flame starts coming out the intake. I've seen other burners where the end of the tip is visible through the intake holes/slots...do I have to move the intake holes back? Do I need to worry about imminent death/disfigurement if there is a bit of flame coming out of the intake holes? appreciate any feedback, this build is really for my 12 year old son who is totally enamored with the idea of forging, so hey, if it ain't an xbox, I'm all over it.
