I left it as forged, I thought about heat treating it as a cold chisel, but I have a nasty habit of using my screwdrivers as small pry bars.

Two more, just an idea I wanted to create. Riveted antler handles.

Love the pipe tool, I saw the replicas before but only now I see it in scale and in use. I’m a pipe smoker also. Great work.

This was excellent practice, I made it from a coiled spring 12 mm thick (just under half an inch). So I had to do some straightening, some upsetting on the handle part, tapering it, upsetting on the other side and flattening it out. All the basic operations. Not much to look at but I do have some ideas for another screwdriver. Also while I was waiting for it to heat I hammered some small hooks from old broken screws.

Round bar 12 mm thick, that is just under half an inch.

Nice, I would like to see the door that it will be mounted on.

Thanks John, it was driving me nuts. My grandmother still has a foot powered sewing machine, I had no idea there was hand powered ones. :) Well I took it because I thought I could make something from it, maybe a small round stone grinder/sharpener.

Not necessary. I turn the handle and the little piece on the back turns also. The handle has a big gear and the piece on the back a small one. Don't know the ratio, didn't count. I can turn it in both directions.

Well we have established what it is, now we need to find out what it does. :D

I went to the scrap yard and bought 32 kilos of files and other blacksmithing tools, 11 files almost all big around 60 cm long (23 inches). It cost me around 20 euros or 25 dollars. But in with the tools was some sort of the crank tool thingy, well you can see on the pictures. So what is it? Maybe it’s not from a blacksmith’s shop but it was with all the other tools that obviously are. The small piece on the back is broken off.

About 20 centimeters or 8 inches.

I'm just a newbie so this was good practice.

And I said it is a dying art because in a little village where my grandparents live (population under 1000 people), according to my grandfather used to be about 30 blacksmiths and now there isn’t one in a 50 kilometer radius. He says that when the electric welding machines came the blacksmiths started to close shop. Glad to hear it is a different story in the UK.

From Croatia to be exact. My name is Davor and I am new to this blacksmithing stuff, I found this forum to be very helpful so I presume the only course of action is to join this fine community. I have made a few knifes, but only a small number by hammering down and that was very crude and needed a lot of grinding. But now I’m more interested in the other aspects of blacksmithing. The only problem I have (besides the lack of knowledge and skill LOL) is that I can’t have a stationary forge so I have made a small mobile one. Anvil from a railroad track and a forge from some sort of a water container (a hidropak). The air suplly is from a compressor. I have made some crude tongs and hooks and a proper forged blade.
