  1. I though you guys might like to see this. I decided I needed a quality forging hammer and couldn't afford a custom made one so I decided to see if it was time I could make one. This started out as a 5" long piece of S7 jack hammer pin an 1 3/4" in diameter off a mini excavator at work. While it's far from perfect I'm more than happy with the way it turned out. It weighs in right at 3lbs.
  2. I'm gonna keep an eye on this as I'm interested in what people think as well. I have mine mounted at about waist height because I tried it lower and it was uncomfortable and hard on my back. I forge a hot cut for my anvil out of 2" H13 with it at that height and I didn't really think about it being to high but maybe I just don't know any better. After all I haven't been doing this very long. I guess my opinion is do what works and feels comfortable for you. I want to see what the experts say
  3. Unless I miss my guess. I think in the first video their anvil is an old stone crusher jaw die. Very impressive to say the least
  4. Made myself a guillotine tool. I've been wanting to buy one and couldn't afford it so I decided I'd have to figure out how to make one.
  5. I need to get somebody to teach me how to keep the blade square with the hardy shank. I saw it happening when I was about half done and tried to straighten it but no luck. Til I was done I hurt so bad I no longer cared as long as it worked!
  6. I thought you guys might like to see this. I recently acquired a new anvil with an 1 1/4" hardie hole and didn't have any tools for it. I decided to make a hot cut from H13. The only thing I could find that was big enough was a piece of 2". I decided to give it a try and see what happened I ended up with a nice functioning tool. It doesn't look that pretty and it got a little crooked on me but it works like a champ. The hammer is short handled 10lb sledge that I used to do most of the work. I hurt so bad the next day I didn't know if it was worth it or not then I used it to cut some steel today and I forgot how much it hurt already!
  7. I've been looking for another anvil a little heavier than my 134# mouse hole maybe 200# or so and ran across this! It's a little heavier than I was looking for but it has great rebound and nice sharp corners. It does have a pretty good dip in the center but I can live with that. It has a cross and then queens Dudley warranted under that and the guy told me it was a joseph Wilkinson but I can 't read that part so I'll take his word for it. It has a 15/16" pritchel hole and a 1 3/8" hardie hole. The flat horn is nice and flat so I can use that if I need a longer flat spot. It rings like a bell so I'm gonna have to get it mounted good and see if I can quiet it down some. Let me know what you think. So far I like I'm happy with it.
  8. In the picture it is definatly a t shape with two dots
  9. Appreciate the feedback and advice. Are they fairly decent quality anvils as far as how they were made? Thanks
  10. I found a anvil about an hour from me that the ad says is #300 and I talked to him and he said he weighed it and that's what he got. The numbers he gave me of the side if they are hundred weight numbers came out to 289 so he's probably not far off. He has no idea what kind it is and in the pictures it shows a cross with two dots I've never seen anything like it and I can't figure out how to get the picture on here do you guys have any ideas. It's been used pretty good the corners are rounded off but he claims it has good rebound and he'd sell it for $500. I'm thinking about going and looking at it but would like to have an idea what I'm looking at.
  11. My motor is a farm duty motor so it is sealed up pretty good. I ended up going with a 1 1/2 hp I tried a 1 hp because I had it but it didn't have enough power. I bought the contact wheels the big one on ebay and the other from usa knife maker.
  12. Thanks for the kind words guys. And yea for me the disc is definitely worth the extra work it took to get it.
  13. I just got this finished up and so far I'm quite pleased with it. It's not perfect but it works well and works way better than my cheap 1 x 42 I had before. You guys let me know what you think and if there is anything about it you like and want to copy for your build go ahead most of it's not original with me. I did a lot of researching before I started. The fixed platen I used a piece of glass glued with jb weld to a piece of angle iron and so far I like it. The plates behind the belt and the disc are to help stop sparks from flying everywhere. The quality of the pictures isn't that great as my camera is on it's last legs but they will give you an idea what it looks like. .
  14. I just got done building one and so far am pleased with it I thought about trying to go the vfd route but decided it was to expensive and just used step pulleys instead and I actually like it quite well. I have a 7" serrated contact wheel a 2" contact wheel, a slack belt setup and a fixed platen setup. I also incorporated an 8" disk into mine as well. I think I have around 700.00 in mine. I'll try to get some pictures up so you can see it this evening if I can get time
