  1. Oh, my apologies. I didn't see the sales pitch you refer to. And if it's already been covered on this forum, then I'll search through the posts until I find what I'm looking for. The part I was referring to though was is there a Benoit to forging over other methods beside not wasting as much material and not being limited to the shape you're given. As I said, I'm happy to look it up.
  2. I saw this article and was just wondering what others thought. Think about what? there was no new information there, and it covered a wide area. Everything that link covered has already been posted in this section. Except for the sale pitch for his damascus. Why not just say what you were interested in talking about, and what you think Off site sales links has been removed.
  3. I can see your point. If you're going to make it a dull edge that will make it difficult to cut anything, you may as we'll make it a false edge.
  4. That's why I enjoy reading through all the posts. The part about micro fractures throughout the steel and not easily knowing they are there. I'm a mechanic for a trucking company and have access to a large supply of leaf springs, broken ones. I will heed the warning and likey only use them for practice.
  5. Thanks Vaughn! This site has been a huge help for me. I had read through nearly every post about solid fuel forges. I read about what people have done, what they like, what they don't. I combined that with my own likings to know what all I wanted. I agreed with those who said they like having a table as part of it. Also about having a switch to turn the blower off when not using it. Stuff like that.
  6. I have been working on this forge for a while and have finally finished it. Except for the blower and the dimmer switch, it is entirely made from scrap from my work. I only have $33 and a lot of lunch breaks into making it. I used 8" S.S. hose tube, 2 S.S. dome lids, half an oil filter crusher stand, a big rig break drum, 2 S.S. half fenders from a big rig truck, scrap angle iron, a 3" S.S. pipe with camlock ends and a high beam floor switch. Painted in 2000 degree matte black.
  7. It's a great video for an easy way to make a forge that he put together. I did find it odd though that he goes through the trouble to make an educational YouTube video, then throws a jab at anyone who watches educational YouTube videos.
  8. Oh wow, cool. I'm honored that you'd share it with me.
  9. A picture if a knife treated with mustard
  10. I have a book on knife making that says you can rub mustard on the blade after it is well degreased. The acid on the mustard bonds with the iron and creates a discolored protective coating. Doesn't say what the color is though.
