  1. whats better to quench a blade in? water brine or oil, or if theres another method to harden let me know as ill be guessing as i go along:D
  2. a half hearted jest, but it was also serious cuz although i am confident in my abilities i know that eventualy i will screw up oh also if anyone knows any blacksmiths in colorado springs that may be willing to pass on some knowledge, id rather learn from them than just blueprints and id be much obliged
  3. i think walmart has a place in this world, for grocerys and candles and...such. cuz in the city there are not alot of farmers markets and family stores. HOWEVER. i do believe in small buisnesses, my dad owns an appliance service station and he does alot of the repairs himself. but yall are right people dont care about quality, there perfectly happy funding comunists in china. also im 6' and i can fit in my dads old 82 porch...its just the xxxx clutch thats hard thing only like 3cm
  4. perhaps ill frame it and weld it to my fence...wonder if that would be worth the retributions of my parental units...
  5. so when i incorectly make the tongs can they be pounded back together into a billot so i can try again or do i have to use new stock

  7. k so ive been scrounging around for some supplys to smith and ive got my anvil, a vice...of some sort, crosspeen, ballpeen, a minisledge. a bunch of metal buckets for various reasons. still lookin for some tongs advice on that would be apreciated. still building my forge. am i missing anything?
  8. brand: no idea it was so beat to xxxx when i got it it was scary size: 150lbs Condition: pretty bad. ive fixed all the bumps and huge creavases(no clue as to how they got there they were like and inch deep and 3 long)... price: 25$, but u can find these things in junkyards all over colorado, + alot of older people have em to.
  9. how does one determin the contents and or approximate carbon content of a piece of steel...or is it even possible
  10. haha my shop dosnt even have a full roof. its on the side of my house sitting on a bunch of flagstone, but the whole area probly takes up about 15x15'(i dont have a large colection of tools yet. anvil to my left coal diagonaly left behind me, slacktub to my forward right diagonal my forge a quater built in front of me and half of everything else i need around my yard in tarps...should probly organize before i realy start smithing....

  12. found ur site yesterday wile looking for some baseline knowledge on blacksmithing. realy like ur site loads of info. if yall have any books on the subject you could refer me to thatd be great cuz i wana learn as much as a can before i finish my forge. ps when i try to look into the 200-900 BP's i get an error 403...says im restricted from acess .
