    well i have some old mule drawn plow sweeps and they are a perfect fit for the vise. looks like it is for forming or reforming plows.

    sorry i cant get these pics bigger.when i took my grandpas forge apart to relocate it to my shop this was mounted on a post set in the ground just outside his smithy. ive seen it all my life but never asked what it was for. now papa and daddy are dead and i cant figure this thing out. the arm works like a cam. the jaws are molded to match each other. theres a pin inside kindof like a tooth. thanks for the replies.

    the dang pic is small and upside down. it was mounted on a post and has a 6 ft post for a handle.

    Hb 120 . cant read the sn but its been in my family since it was new. i use it all the time but it is bout wore out.

    I have tools from 5 generations of family farm blacksmithing amd this is the only one ive never used and dont know what it is for.

    I was thinking cottonwood forge because my shop is surrounded by cottonwood trees but i see it is already in use, so I been saying cottonwood iron works. What yall think.

    when i was a kid and my grandpa and me would be working cattle he would always say "slow down, we're in a hurry". So slow and right beats fast and wrong every time.

    I like mine to be as lite as i can stand. Looks good for a first try.

    my stack is tall and black but still just doesn't draw well enough. I used a barrel standing on end with a 10x10 hole cut in the bottom and placed right at the fire pot. it makes a 90 straight out of the barrel to get outside and then 90 up but its not perfect 90 or flat it angles upward the whole way. i wonder if the barrel is the problem. Oh yeah i took the rain cap off and it made no difference. I don't really understand the injector .

    I have 8" stove pipe and want to know how to make a forced draft chimney for my forge.? i can't figure how to introduce forced air without burning up blowers.

    thanks for the replies but i scrapped the dryer motor and used a 1 hp motor i had on the farm.

    o.k. the colors of the three wires that actually come out of the motor are,orange,green,and black. If i hook black to black and green to green it does nothing. If i hook blk to blk and green to green and orange to white it runs but gets very hot very quick. I tried unhooking the orange wire once it started running but it just stopped running. also If i hook blk to blk and white to orange but leave green unhooked it just hums. I'm confusing myself now.

    no I'm not sure its wired correct. I figures the black was hot so put 110 on it and tied the other two to the common and the ground. i didn't think about a start circuit , that would need a momentary on switch or a hand start. How in the world could i figure out which wire it is.

    I have a question for anyone who has used a dryer blower on a forge. The motor says 115 volt but i thought it would be 220. there are 3 wires actually coming from the motor black orange and blue I think. I wired it up to a 120 cord and it turned fine but the motor got hot and started smoking. This could be from dust as it has been sitting open in a shop for a long time, but i am not sure. should this motor get hot within seconds.

    those look just like the two i have. mine have model no. 40 on the gearbox. I Don't know anything about them except that they've been in my family since my dad was a kid. sorry i can't help.

    I know it has been covered but i have searched and cannot find info on hammer making such as 1- type of steel 2- heat treating 3- scrap yard steels that make good hammers. If i overlooked this in the search engine i apologize but any help would be appreciated.

    I have destroyed a chain or two with no success. I would love to see some input from the pros on this one as well.

    I am using a brake rotor for the fire pot,I think the pot is 8" diA. Since i am interested in damascus i just want to make sure i can get hot enough to weld. This will be my second forge and i suspect not my last. I am just learning more of what i want and need.

    I read somewhere that you wanted at least 350 cfm, Have you guys found that not to be true? If i can get away with a 100 cfm it shouldn't be to hard to find something. I've been sitting here looking for a pic of a clothes dryer fan but can't find one. I have a source for dryer parts for free.

    I've started my permanent forge inside and am in need of ideas for an electric blower. I would love to be able to salvage rather then buy a new electric blower. I want more than a hair dryer. I've also got to find a source for a air gate or whatever they are actually called. I would love to hear some of the things Ya'll have used.
